Idris Muhammad

An excellent drummer who appeared in many types of settings, Idris Muhammad became a professional when he was 16. He played primarily soul and R&B during 1962-1964 and then spent 1965-1967 as a member of Lou Donaldson's band. He was the house drummer at Prestige Records (1970-1972), appearing on many albums as a sideman. Of his later jazz associations, Muhammad played with Johnny Griffin (1978-1979), Pharoah Sanders in the 1980s, George Coleman, and the Paris Reunion Band (1986-1988). He recorded everything from post-bop to dance music as a leader for such labels as Prestige, Kudu, Fantasy, Theresa, and Lipstick. Muhammad, who retired to New Orleans from New York City in 2011, died in July 2014 at the age of 74. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

This was the tune I used as the intro into my jazz show back at Kent State University in 1975. Great memories... great music.
So good. Reminds me why I'm proud to be a "child of the 70's"!
His music brings me back to the 70's in NY when we had several good jasz stations. Sometimes depending on who you are listening too, jazz can be seasonal, if you know what I mean.
Great sound reminds me of left bank jazz society here in Baltimore back in the days.love the man and his music RIP.brother.
Love this hook
Power of Soul is such a great album - just added it to my collection. Idris is a great find - Peace of Mind is my 2014 summer jam.

haven't listened to him enough to know if he sucks or not but I am enjoying the piano and horn...just don't know who is playing them.
Caught him last year at Yoshi's in Oakland. There's only one question that comes to mind: Why?
World's worst drummer ... one lick, that's it. They should call him thumper.
