Igor Stravinsky

June 17, 1882 - April 6, 1971
born in Orianenbaum, Russia, composed during the Modern period
Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) was a Russian composer who established his reputation with three groundbreaking ballets: L'oiseau de feu, Petrushka, and Le Sacre du printemps. Abruptly changing styles were characteristic of Stravinsky throughout his long career, though his works may be grouped in three broad categories, according to his Russian, neo-classical, and serial periods. Yet whether he exploited Russian folk rhythms, as in Les Noces; obscure Classical pieces, as in Pulcinella; or the twelve-tone row, as in his Requiem Canticles, Stravinsky revealed a strong personality that was easily identified through his quirky metric changes, angular melodies, and spicy harmonic language. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi

Awh Igor, you are the morning moon on the pale horizon; Midnight in Manhattan; The final round of championship fight; wave after wave after wave crashing unto a fragile shore. Thank you.
Can music be any better than what this man created?

I love Stravinsky. The Firebird Suite is one of my favorite Symphonies. Sometimes I cry when I hear it because of the sheer magnitude and beauty of this piece. I've also been fortunate to see The Dance Theatre of Harlem perform this ballet. I am so grateful for the arts and I support arts in the schools.
Noisecore before it's time. I love it.

i remember seeing the rite of spring at the SF Ballet it blew my mind. terrifying and brilliant.
Stravinsky is a great composer. The first time I heard his works was an ABT performance of all three ballets--fir s t Firebird, then Petrushka, then Rite of Spring. This was my first introduction to classical music in a live performance and it was ballet! I'll never forget this amazing music and experience. I was 19 years old.
Outstanding piece.

As soon as Pandora added classical music to the site Stravinsy was the first composer I wanted to create a station for. Sheer genius.

The rite of spring is by far the best ballet ever! The police had to be called at its premier!
