Information Society

An agreeable dance outfit with ties to industrial music, techno, and funk plus an equally appreciable pop sense, Information Society hit the dance clubs and later the charts with their infectious breakout single, 1988's "What's on Your Mind (Pure Energy)." The group, a quartet formed in Minneapolis by James Cassidy, Paul Robb, Kurt Harland (aka Kurt Valaquen), and Amanda Kramer, signed to Tommy Boy Records a few years later and recorded a self-titled debut album. The single "What's on Your Mind (Pure Energy)," propelled by a Leonard Nimoy sample and Valaquen's smooth, assured vocals, became a club hit and eventually landed at number three in the pop charts. Later that year, "Walking Away" hit the Top Ten as well, and the album reached gold-certified status. Kramer left soon after, however, to record with the Golden Palominos, 10,000 Maniacs, and also on her own. Information Society's sophomore album, similar to not-so-famous follow-ups by dance-popsters EMF and Jesus Jones, was more than competent but mostly ignored by critics who had pegged them as one-hit wonders. Several singles managed shallow chart exposure, but after the third album (1994's Peace & Love, Inc.), both Robb and Cassidy exited. Harland continued on, releasing the industrial-tinged Don't Be Afraid for Cleopatra Records in 1997. ~ John Bush, Rovi

Saw I.S. last year. Still full of pure energy!
I never realized how many songs I loved from I.S.
I wanna know what these spammers are thinking - do they think they're funny?
I love this song soooo much...:-) gives me really good memories. Running. Great song.
My band is called Boner Patrol. Look for us on Ebay!

I wanna know what your thinking
Using digitized audio clips of famous sound bites in early 80s, they were not the first but they set a helluva trend.
i thought pure energy was Ronald Reagan voice
love this back in the day, dance all freekin night ehhh
Cool song from back in the day!!
HACK. PLAY IT, DAMN IT!
Latin hip hop influences were part of the repertoire for this group as well. Either way, they make it work, cuz I still listen to them randomly.
80's 4 ever

Love information society and the 80s and I love the 90s
As a punk rock fan growing up, Information Society was definitely one of my top guilty pleasures.

Love them
1.kiss your left hand 2. Close it 3. Say the name of your crush 4. Say a weekday 5. Say your name 6. Open your hand 7. Now post this to 15 other songs and your crush will ask you out on that day
we know vegan
No mention to running which was played at every dance party...lol sad.
The voice that says Pure Energy is actually Leonard Nimoy. No joke.
Legacy of Kain introduced me to this band. Lead singer is the main composer for all of the games in the series. Though I don't think he actually did the soundtrack for the first Blood Omen.
The group rocks.
I love you justin...kis s your hand 10 times say ur crush 15 times post this coment on 2 diff stations then look at your hand

Memories of dancing all night in a true dance bar along with your best friends... great times!
Dont' be Afraid is a very different sound, but still very good in it's own right, not to mention for all you gamers out there, Ozar Midrashim is the theme song from Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. He did the entire game soundtrack. Very cool stuff!
Running was their breakout single; I'm surprised there's no mention in the bio...
INSOC remains a timeless piece of dance music that many modern day electronic dance artists mimic today. The technology has been improved but the style of Information Society in the 80s still inspires today. Cut with samples, catchy riffs, and dance floor friendly breaks the music of INSOC will always remain one of my all-time favorites.
KOOTER that's actually really cool. crop and soil sciences, just goes to show that most musicians are pretty intelligent.
zorkoff
NEVER HEARD OF THESE GUYS, GOOD STUFF THOUGH.
I am so stuck in the 80's and Information Society is one of those bands that contribute to my obsession with the whole techno, synthesizer type of music that makes me feel alive and like a teenager forever....P u r e Energy~

James is a cool dude here at Crop and Soil Sciences, OSU. (soil--not dirt)
I took a crop and soil science class from James Cassidy at Oregon State. Definitly a cool and laid back guy.
i remember doing whip its at the clubs in MPLS and hookin up with post op trannies n smokin DMT with my pet tiger
I like thie cover of "Are Friends Electric?" Any band that covers anything from Gary Numan or Tubeway has got to know what they are doing. Don't Be Afraid is a great record. Very different than what you would think.
Wonder if I can get my librarian friends hooked on this?
shrimpbarney
love it...
I love INSOC and METAL but it was hard to bridge the gap among my metal friends.
Pure energy.

Eddie "GOpez" López well stated. I agree completely with you. Love your description of the song bringing back memories in the form of a video log. great music it was!
e_rhythm
In fact. i've always been a fan of both new wave and this era of music in general but amongst my metal loving peers i would never admit my love of disco, new wave rock, and etc. anything outta the confined tastes of heavy metal-ers and hard rockers. their narrow minds are too busy being absolute about head banging rock. but i loved it all and they just didn't understand it. Living in Los Angeles most of my life i spent my radio listening to KNAC-PURE ROCK 105.5 - LBC, CA and KROQ 106.7 - Burbank
e_rhythm
i agree with my prior commentator. Josiah you are right. seeding i did do with them along with dp t4f, a-ha, a flock o..., etc.
e_rhythm
they have an iconic sound that is embedded in the time line of my existence as an early teen in high school and it's so interlaced in my memories that it almost forms part of a video log memory with a soundtrack. I'm an 80's fan and all this early techno and new wave impacted the way i lived and enjoyed life in this fabulous era. Pure Energy, this song definitely stands out as one of the first 10 songs that come to mind when i think of these memories, be it concerts, parties, driving in cars wit
There are quintessenti a l artist that can be used for "seeding" when starting a station on Pandora-I used the song "pure energy"-name d my station "pure energy" and haven't been disappointed by a selection yet-in point of fact-I haven't changed the station in 5 weeks!
