Jamie Cullum

British pianist/vocalist Jamie Cullum mixes jazz with melodic pop and rock into a crossover style that calls to mind such artists as Harry Connick, Jr., and Norah Jones. In that vein, Cullum will just as often cover a swinging jazz standard as a modern rock song, and his original compositions deftly move from earnest ballads to songs of sardonic wit. Having played guitar and piano since age eight, Cullum developed an avid interest in jazz passed down from his older brother Ben. Inspired by such piano icons as Oscar Peterson and Dave Brubeck, Cullum spent some of his formative years living in Paris, where he honed his abilities performing in jazz clubs.

Cullum eventually earned a degree from Reading University, during which time he recorded his first album, Heard It All Before, at age 19. The surprise success of that album eventually put him in contact with jazz bassist Geoff Gascoyne, who offered Cullum the opportunity to play on his album Songs of the Summer. With Gascoyne's encouragement, Cullum eventually recorded his second album, Pointless Nostalgic, released in 2002. The album benefited from a boost of publicity as it received heavy airplay on TV and radio personality Michael Parkinson's BBC 2 radio show. Cullum eventually signed with Universal Records and released his third album, Twentysomething, in 2003. Catching Tales and the compilation/mixtape album In the Mind of Jamie Cullum followed in 2005 and 2007, respectively. In 2009, Cullum was nominated along with Clint Eastwood for a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song for their composition "Gran Torino." ~ Matt Collar, Rovi

Harry Connick, Jr. has more in common with Frank Sinatra and Norah Jones doesn't rock. Cullum follows Billy Joel, Joe Jackson and Ben Folds and recalls Oscar Peterson and Dave Brubeck in his solos.

First saw Jamie Cullum on Austin City Limits while living in Texas & when he performed at Stubbs, I was there. FABULOUS live performer!!!
Jamie Cullum is one of my favorite artists of all time. His songs make me dance and they're catchy.
Unbelievable at the Britt in Jacksonville . . . a n d he surrounds himself with true talent like his own like his bass player, Chris Hill, and his drummer, Brad Webb. Incredible soul jarring music!
Agreed! I just saw him at the Botanic Gardens in Denver,CO ... SIMPLY INCREDIBLE!

I love Jamie Cullum and, to me, there is no other artist out there like him. Come to Texas, Jamie and I'll make the drive to wherever you are!
Reminds me of early Billy Joel. Very cool song!
Jamie Cullum is outstanding. S a w him in Cleveland at the House of Blues.He is a great talent.If you haven't listened to him yet,I strongly encourage you to do so.Great Musician/Sin g e r /songwriter/ e n t e r t a i n e r . Check him out.Catching tales is a great album!!
I don't see the Harry Connick, Jr, Norah Jones comparison. He's much more original than any of the artists that he's being compared to. Watch him -- he's going to surprise a lot of people.

I went to see him, having not heard of him, on a whim in '04 at a really small venue in San Diego. He was so much fun to watch. His energy and enthusiasm opened my ears to the classic crooners. His covers are always interesting and never do the originals an injustice. He also has many incredible originals himself. Go see him when you get a chance!
Love his voice. Fell for him when we went to see Gran Torino
This guy has a very interesting and versatile range.
acoviel
amazing artist his arrangements are incredible and his original songs have such emotion in both the melody and lyrics. I can't wait to see him perform live in March
He's jazzy, punky, hip-hoppy, sloppy, and cute as hell

I heard the song "Gran Torino" and it just ... ... He has such an amazing voice. It's thrilling!

Saw Jamie 2x's at the Pageant, here in St. Louis, in 2006 & 2007... I knew he was phenomenal - but didn't fully understand until I saw it live, first hand. The guy is an awesome musician and puts on one of the best shows I have ever seen... Brought my mom with me to the 2nd concert in 2007 - she was blown away too - wanted to go out immediately and buy his CD's. And she's not into Jazz. He deserves much more attention than he gets. Eagerly looking for new music and a tour.

Its great to read some many positive comments about him, I took a friend of mine to one of his concerts. My friend literally cant tell the difference between a trumpet and a clarinet and her loved the concert, he doesnt like jazz or instrumental music. He's strictly a country fan and he still loved the concert and couldnt stop talking about it afterward. Jamie is a incredible talent and an even better performer.
I love this guy !! he is awesome !!
saw him at Hollywood Bowl in August 2008- incredible surprise!
The song Gran Torino, which plays over closing credits, just blew my socks off. I had to immediately download and find out who had this haunting and unforgettabl e voice! Nice to meet you, Jamie!

I saw Jamie perform a live performance video of his cover of Jimi Hendryx's "Angel" on the late great cable channel "The Tube" but have not seen it as a recording. Does anyone know where you can get a download of this?
Saw him at the Kimmel Center in Philly and also at HOB in Atlantic City in '06. We actually met him at the Irish Pub in AC before the show! He is not only an awesome performer, but a real down-to-eart h guy. Jamie Cullum LIVE is a must-see!

I saw him perform in New Orleans at Jazz Fest and at the Carolina Theatre in my home state of NC. Both shows were awesome!! I have not heard anyone like him before and to hear him live is spectacular. I was able to meet him in New Orleans and at the NC show....very gracious young man.
