Jay Beckenstein

Alto (and sometimes soprano) saxophonist Jay Beckenstein founded the highly successful crossover jazz outfit Spyro Gyra in 1974 and led the group throughout more than a quarter-century tenure. Beckenstein grew up in a musical family -- his mother was an opera singer, his father a jazz buff -- and began playing the saxophone at age seven, joining school bands and playing both jazz and R&B. After graduating high school, Beckenstein and his friend, keyboardist Jeremy Wall, moved to Buffalo, where Beckenstein studied music at SUNY-Buffalo. Beckenstein and Wall began to headline their own gigs around the city and that collaboration evolved into Spyro Gyra, which went on to a long, prolific, and successful career. In 2000, Beckenstein finally issued his very first solo album, a guest-studded affair titled Eye Contact. ~ Steve Huey

I saw Spiro-Gyra for the first time in 1979 for an intamate group of college students in Pensacola, Florida. The band at the time had a percussionis t that would play with every limb on his body, kicking high over his head to strum the graduated chimes! What a show!

It's about time he broke out with his own single. I would love to hear a single by each member of the group own their own. What a treat that would be. Note that the spyro sound has evolved in this CD. Get it today.11

Perhaps one of the most heard and least known saxophonists of our time. Truly not as recognized for his playing as much as his leadership as the co-founder of Spyro Gyra. The number of tunes written or co-written by this man is phenomenal. Along with Grover Washington, I would say that Jay Beckenstein created the niche market that came to be known as smooth jazz. This CD is a tribute to his sax playing and it is among the most played CD's on my iPod.
