Jean Sibelius

December 8, 1865 - September 20, 1957
born in Hämeenlinna, Finland, composed during the Modern period
Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) was Finland's leading post-Romantic composer of symphonies and a national icon. Beginning as a follower of Richard Strauss, Sibelius achieved fame with his symphonic poems Kullervo and Finlandia, and his early symphonies also gained many supporters. A crisis in 1908 over a throat tumor darkened Sibelius' mood, and music composed after this time bears a brooding character, most notable in the later symphonies and tone poems. Sibelius stopped composing in 1925 and spent his long retirement revising his works and being fêted as a grand old man of classical music. His 90th birthday celebration brought worldwide adulation. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi

The more I listen to Sibelius the more I enjoy. I've listened to Classical for more than 50 years and can always find new pleasures. He can be serene or rousing, I seem to always think of an ocean while listening to no.5.
Motto bene!

Welcome all new comers to the great composers (maestros) of what I call the great romantic classics...w h e r e have you been? Listening to all that stuff in what we Americans call music since the lousy pop culture? I am a 60s child who loved the Beatles then jumped right into the Classics...y o u can find great self peace, knowledge, understandin g of this crazy world learning of the composers and listen, listen, listen to their interior world of music!
Does this remind anyone else of the hymnal "Be still my soul"
This is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever created by mankind. I love this piece.
rpluta
Very nice piece!
The haunting sound reflects the Scandinavian spirit. I have loved Sibelius' music for over 50 years, and it never loses its magnificence for me.

Understand Sibelius suffered 'the composers' disease' and went deaf before he died. . . It particularly comes out in his quartet work. Mitch Miller, oboest, composer, clown has recorded (famously) this work. Life is wonderful!!
Very nice piece of music. It's no way how someone can put this song into one word.the story that is told behind this piece is amazing!!

The Swan Of Tuonela, very nice. Lots of mysterious atmosphere! Thank you!
Finlandia. I know, it's cliche, but.... Finlandia... . . . . N o one conducts it better than Karajan, btw.
I'm really digging the quartets right now!
The 5th Symphony is great for flying into the sunset on a jet
After 48 years of listening to it....it just gets better
Valse Triste
Awesome.
@itsrooster. 1 0 0 !?!? How could you say that!? At the very least, the last 1 or 2 movements are simply fascinating, and some of the greatest works of art I have ever heard! Maybe you just have to hear it live... Sibelius is definitely in my top one list of fav composers :D
2nd symphony is pretty borring
His 5th and 7th Symphonies are on my list as the 20 greatest.
Hey! Where's the yellow ribbon round the ol oak tree? I never hurd of J. Sibelius and just stumbbled into him. He,s good! Don't I get a welcome kiss or a bouguet or something? DMB
His violin concerto is surely the best of the Late Romantic period.
Just went to listen to the Albuquerque Philharmonic (all volunteer orchestra/fr e e concert) perform Finlandia last Thursday. Very well done, very moving. I suppose Finnish ancestry on my Mother's side doesn't hurt my appreciation .
I adore his piano pieces, especially the Souvenirs. Opus 99 is my favourite.
Love the Swan of Tuonela

the 5th is devastatingl y beautiful

I'll never forget the first time I heard the 5th symphony, randomly popping cassettes in my mom's car one night. Even that first time I felt I had really found something special.

There were so many brilliant composers that did not have their compositions burned. I salute you Jean Sibelius!
still wonder what symphony no 8 sounds like
The version of the Karelia Suite march is much too slow. It's much more appealing at
a faster templ.
Be still, my soul.
patchman91
His 5th symphony is GREAT to listen to while driving through the mountains!
His music is terrific. I have had the honor of playing it as a member of a fine orchestra, conducting vocal arrangements , and of course, listening. I was also able to travel to Finland several times and visited his national monument. stunning.
stevengayle
Hi music makes me just "feel".
mrned26
I don't know how to describe music, so I'll just say I've liked the music of Sibelius since I first heard it in my teens, especially his 5th Symphony. His 2nd Symphony has also been a favorite. I like them all except for the 1st and the 7th (the "tone poem".) Too bad he didn't write for the last 30 years of his life.
Passionate! This man's music makes you wanna make love!
yes, I know i spelled raptoreous wrong. i'm too lazy to look it up right now. oh well. deal with it.
Gorgeous! Raptoreuos, even! wow!!!
Inspiring and soothing music!
Wonderful

I was visiting Finland las week and attended a small concert of his music and I reallly love it! I will be hearing it from now on on. Often we feel the way
he probably did not want to transfer to his music, but it was inside him already. Beautiful music!!!!
.......with scruffy doo......... .
.........AND . . . . . . . w o u l d never have pictured sibelius in napoleonesqu e , hand-in-jack e t pose!!
.......Finla n d i a does it for me........br a s s musician.... . . . w h a t fun! ......with serious spiritual overtones... . . . l o v e it!!
This symphony never fails to awaken in me a sense of northern climes, evergreen forests, lakes the whole Finland scene.
