Jeff Buckley

Since he was the son of cult songwriter Tim Buckley, Jeff Buckley faced more expectations and pre-conceived notions than most singer/songwriters. Perhaps it wasn't surprising that Jeff Buckley's music was related to his father's by only the thinnest of margins. Buckley's voice was grand and sweeping, which fit with the mock-operatic grandeur of his Van Morrison-meets-Led Zeppelin music. His audacious debut Grace made him one of the most popular alternative artists of the '90s, accentuated by his early and tragic death in 1997, and his cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" virtually redefined the song for a modern audience.

Buckley began playing while in high school. Eventually, he moved to Los Angeles to study music; while he was there, he performed with several jazz and funk bands, as well as playing with Shinehead, a leader in the dancehall reggae movement. A few years later, he moved to New York, forming Gods & Monsters with the experimental guitarist Gary Lucas. The band became a hip name, yet their lifespan was short. Buckley began a solo career playing clubs and coffeehouses, building up a considerable following. Soon, he signed a record deal with Columbia Records, releasing the Live at Sin-e EP in November of 1993. It received good reviews, yet they didn't compare to the raves Buckley's full-length debut, 1994's Grace, received. Unlike the EP, the album was recorded with a full band, which gave the record textures that surprised some of his long-time New York followers. Nevertheless, it made several year-end "Best of 1994" lists and earned him a belated alternative hit, "Last Goodbye," in the spring of 1995.

A long hiatus followed as Buckley worked on material for his follow-up effort, provisionally titled My Sweetheart, The Drunk. Originally slated to be produced by Tom Verlaine, who later dropped out of the project, Buckley finally began work on the record in Memphis during the late spring of 1997. On the night of May 29, he and a friend traveled to the local Mud Island Harbor, where Buckley spontaneously decided to go swimming in the Mississippi River and waded into the water fully clothed. A few minutes later, he disappeared under the waves; authorities were quickly contacted, but to no avail -- on June 4, his body was finally found floating near the city's famed Beale Street area. Buckley was 30 years old. A collection of unreleased recordings, Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk, appeared in 1998, and two live albums arrived during 2000-2001, Mystery White Boy and Live a l'Olympia. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

He had to touch and experience anything that brought wonder to him. His own friends let alone Jeff never knew what he might do next at any spur of the moment. Why fully clothed? Well maybe the best answer is that he was Jeff Buckley and Jeff Buckley did things like that. He loved to hear the sound of his voice as he sang when he was swimming and as that tugboat approached he was singing Whole Lotta Love because the echoe of his voice on the water made him sound like Robert Plant..

An accidental death as he got caught in the wake of a passing tugboat which pulled him below to the currents of the river. Months later on his first birthday after his passing his mother came to this spot and threw a bouquet of roses into the river. As she pondered how Jeff could have drowned in such a place she watched an approaching tugboat pass by and in its wake she saw it suck the flowers below the surface. They never reappeard as they too were swallowed by the river. Sad tragedy.

Bea, read the book Dream Brother. It gives a full account of what happened that day. Locals to that area had known not to swim in that particular area of the Wolf River due to the strong currents. Jeff did not know this as he had moved there only a few months before and had swam in the same spot previously without an issue. I highly doubt it was a murder as they were both killing time before the band flew in to start recorded. You can get more answers from the book though.

So: I have a question: I read about Jeff's death. I have a question about it? I know for a fact that at that time of month, it's freaking hot in the Midwest. My question is rather sensitive. After reading details, I would like to know if Kieth Foti is capable of murdering Jeff, or did the tugboat run over him, or do you think he drowned by having a really strong water current drag him under? No one ever addressed these things really and I would like to know.

note to self/ others . they've been kicking the movie idea around for a while , Franco among others. Duhh myself.

Jeff Buckley's album Grace is awesome.Hall e l u j a h is on it, and some others that IMHO range from fragile and vulnerable, to powerful and outright rocking! Come to think of it i should prob pick up his other albums. I don't know much about his life except this bio,but If they ever do a movie about him , i nominate James Franco while he's young enough.

Anyone noticed the last thing he said at Sin-e was "Lets go drink and sleep," and get how creepy that is? He drowned!?!?! He went swimming and died!!! "Lets go drink and sleep" and he drowned!!! Not okay :(
