Words can not express the total emotion of this song.
Such a glorious and gracious melody - and such sad lyrics. What a dichotomy. Listening at high volume and had to stop working to fully take it in....feelin g those chills, too!
Another example of pure musical genious, I get chills up and down my spine everytime I hear this song. Jeff Buckley was taken away from us too soon.

Jeff Buckley didn't write this song. It was originally by Leonard Cohen I think. But this is definitely my favorite version!
The Biblical allusions are blatant. It sounds to me like an existential struggle between the ideals of godliness and the realities of sinful people... and even the complicated way the Bible depicts God's servants (e.g. David and Samson) as both exemplary and flawed.

No idea where he got his idea about love and violence, since the two are polar opposites. Obviously the lyric is laden with cynicism, but I'm not sure how, in any sense, violence could be said to have been "learned from love."
In order to understand the full meaning of this song, one would do well to acquaint oneself with the Biblical love stories of two Old Testament couples: David and Bathsheba, and Samson and Delilah. The "baffled king" is clearly David. That's where we also get the refrain "Hallelujah, " reminiscent of the poet king's cries to God. The "tied you to her kitchen chair . . . cut your hair" clearly alludes to Samson. Read the stories; see what you think.
It was originally written and recorded by Leonard Cohen in the mid-80s. It was in the first Shrek movie. The lyrics are posted above. I suppose they are open to interpretati o n , but I always take it as a bittersweet reminiscence of a relationship turned sour. I guess it could also more generally be seen as love not being romantic, or a Platonic ideal, but rather as something that is as much pain as it is pleasure. Just my thoughts.
Can anyone tell me what the origin of this song is? Is it from a movie? I love this song but I don't understand the meaning. Any thoughts?
@ ed.fitzgeral d 7 It's about falling in love, and how it's not what is expected. That's the simple answer.
Beautiful song but words that make no sense to me.... what the hell was Cohen saying -- or asking? Is this song about lovemaking.. . ? Sex? God?

What is the message?

His break into The Smiths and back is genius.
Thank you, Pandora. I truly have fallen so in love with you.
Breathtaking .
Felt chills up and down my spine listening to this. I like how "un rock" this is when "rock" was what I expected.

Definitely Leonard Cohen Song
i am always amazed at the last hold he does on 'halleluuuuu u u u u j a h " at the end of that song- no matter which recording. i can feel his emotion in those notes all the way through me. i become completely present with all the longing....t h e sweetness... a n d all the surrender...
listen to the "way young lovers do" from the "live at the sin-e" album if you don't know it. amazing.

How crazy it is that Jeff's version of Hallelujah hit #1 on itunes after raves from the American Idol judges. That definitely says something about Jeff, and almost starts to begin to redeem that worthless TV show.

If Bach played guitar....
This is a Leonard Cohen song. I've heard a lot artists cover this song and each is able to make it their own. Tremendous song.
