John Gary

A pleasing vocalist with a warm delivery reminiscent of Andy Williams or Tony Bennett, John Gary unfortunately came along just at the beginning of the British Invasion and never managed to make much of an impression on the adult vocal audience. Born in 1932 in Watertown, New York, he was a singer on Don McNeill's radio show Breakfast Club before signing a contract with RCA Records in 1962. Though only one single charted on the U.S. pop charts -- the Top 100 "Soon I'll Wed My Love" in 1964 -- John Gary did reach the Top 20 with mid-'60s LPs such as The Nearness of You, Encore, and A Little Bit of Heaven, and fared even better on the easy listening charts (with albums including the number one Cold) and Cash Box, where Gary albums hit the Top Ten twice. He also covered a wide repertoire for the time, from show tunes to country hits and romantic ballads -- though, remarkably, very few of the novelty pop songs which dragged down fellow vocalists. I am an ardent John Gary fan. He had a wonderful full-range voice. He also dabbled as an actor. I saw him in a performance of Student Prince back in 1969. I'll never forget it.

Always love hearing a nice song by JG.
We started with his album, catch a rising star where he starts singing as a child and ends the song with his strong adult voice. Saw him twice just outside St. Louis, and once in Denver. It is so hard to believe his great pipes were taken from us so soon; I guess THE MAN could only do without him no more(our loss.

I loved him from the first time I heard his beautiful voice, and here I am at 75 still loving him.
I am sure he is sitting on a cloud singing with the angels.

I first discovered John Gary's fantastic voice during a tour of duty in Vietnam (1969) as a young Marine.. What an amazing gift he had and shared with us. He gave me many moments of 'escape' and I needed them at the time. I greatly miss his influence in the music industry, but am grateful for the impact he did make and the legacy he left behind for us to continue enjoying.
John Gary's More was my husband's and my song. Our daughter made a video for our 45th Anniversary with John's More in the background. Whenever we heard our song we always danced a few steps while it played. My husband passed away last year and whenever I hear that song i wish I could have just one more dance. Jonh had such a beautiful voice and not enough people heard him. He'll always be one of my favorites. RIP John.

One little known piece of information about John Gary. He was a champion free diver and developed some of his incredible breath control as part of his diving.
The best Irish singer of the 50's and 60's. Love is romantic ballads. We miss you Mr. Gary. You were always a class act!

We meet him at an Italian Festival in Melrose Park, Il...with, Sue and Norman Santomauro. He autographed a tape that we purchased. He is one of my favorites.
John Gary is my favorite singer. His Irish ablum is so beautiful as are all the songs he sings. It is such a shame that he never got the recognition hes deserves.
Such a smooth voice. Range and control - beautiful. Truthfully, I never was into Gary's music in the 60s. Since hearing him on Pandora, I'm sold. The song "Give Me This Moment" is a keeper.

there will never be anyone to match the quality of John Gary's voice and range. What a pity that God decided he needed him in heaven instead of leaving him on earth where he brought so much enjoyment to the masses. I wish I could find his lyrics to some of his songs.
I was a teen in the 60's and listened to John Gary over and over, amazed at how seamlessly he could transition into falsetto.
When my friends loved rock and roll, I loved John Gary. When I was in my early 20s he came to my home town and came down into the audience and for some reason chose me. He knelt down next at my table next to my chair and sang "Softly, as I leave you," and I lost my heart. I'll never forget that or him. A wonderful voice, a wonderful man.
