What I enjoy is John brings his own style into the song--but then I'm a lover of music and refuse to bash an artist on such shallow terms as whether or not they've played someone else's tune.
Breaking news! All artists have covered others. It's a way to pay tribute and respect to ones influences.
This is a great remake and for it to be john mayer! rite down his ally. For all the people that don't like people that do remakes of songs. here is something to think about? singers remake a song because it was one of there influences but it also keeps that original artist alive that might have been forgotten. it is weather it is liked or not but it keeps the original artist alive!
Got to agree that Tom Petty can't be matched here, but John Mayer makes it a totally different song I think. It's just...weird, cool, I don't know, just a different deal. ??? ha ha
can't go wrong with John Mayer. I liken him to micheal franks kenny loggins rod stewart, no matter what they do it's good cause its them.

I don't like this version at all. i like the guitar, but his voice butchers it. he can't hit those high notes. and he didn't put any emotion in this song! leave it for the original singer!!
i love this song. i was trying to get this song on youtube but i kept on typing "Free For It" instead of "free fallin'". :) it was and will be stuck in my head all day!
hey chuck dizzle< I got the sac 2 say < John Mayer rocks...just hope he's not in the rothschild clan, hahaha...ur right thoughtthe man sits down with eric clapton, thts enough cred fosho..Namaste

I believe that more people would like this cover if they didn't know who sang it. I know a bunch of guys too insecure to say that they like John Mayer. The dude jams with Eric Clapton for pete's sake...ERIC flippin' CLAPTON. You're in pretty good company if legends let you jam with them.
Besides, it's a legit cover...meaning he took something and made it his own. What would be the point in doing it the same way as Petty? Leave it to Tom to play it like the original for the rest of eternity.
I prefer the original, but those of you bashing it so much are nothing but a bunch of idoits who are just jelous and FYI, most people are out of there perents house before the age of 35, you freeloaders.
I love how everyone is so nit-picky when it comes to covers. This is an excellent rendition of the original. Of course it's going to be in John Mayer's style, it's JOHN MAYER. He made it into his own and that's how covers should be. When bands try to make it exactly like the original, that's when it sucks.
