John Rutter

September 24, 1945 -
born in London, England, composed during the Contemporary period
John Rutter (born 1945 in London) is the preeminent British composer of choral church music of the late twentieth century. His lyrical, accessible style has made his many anthems and carols widely popular with church and community choirs. A graduate of Cambridge University, he founded the Cambridge Singers in 1981, and he has established an extensive international career as a choral conductor. His larger works include Requiem, Gloria, Magnificat, Mass of the Children, two children's operas, and a piano concerto. Among his most lasting legacies is the immensely successful series Carols for Choirs, which he co-edited with David Willcocks. ~ Stephen Eddins, Rovi

I have performed many of Rutter's choral pieces. Beautifully arranged - I get chills singing them every time.

One of my favorites of Ritter.

I sang Rutter's Sheperd's Pipe Carol in choir last semester. It was a really well arranged piece. I loved it.

It's hard to believe that he is an atheist.

Delightful scoring for children's voices and sacred anthems.

One of the greatest composers of our time.

Most of his stuff is good, expect the stuff he writes about singing about music. Not very creative all the time.

We sang John Rutter's Gloria in college... as I listen to more of his pieces, I'm astounded by it all. All over again.

I meant "hear a lot of his works". :-)

I am a big fan of Rutter, and I have sung many of his works. If you like his work, you might enjoy the compositions and arrangements of a contemporary American composer, Mack Wilberg. He also conducts the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, so you will here a lot of his works on MoTab broadcasts and recordings.

I just got done singing Rutter's "Requiem" and came to a comforting and staggering conclusion. If John Rutter, a mortal human, can compose music as compelling and beautiful as this, imagine what the angels are capable of.

Wonderful, deeply spiritual, deeply moving. If you like Rutter, try Eric Whitacre and (for the slightly more adventurous) Morten Lauridsen. ALSO (double exclamation points) anything you can find by the Dale Warland Singers from Minneapolis. PANDORA, please put them on your rotation . . . wonderful music.
"What Sweeter Music" was my introduction to Rutter's beautiful music. And it is sweet, in the very best sense of the word!

When listening to or singing Rutter I think of the natural feeling of progression from Elgar to Vaughan Williams to His music. Each one becomes even more accessible to listener. Beautiful. Reverent.

Rutter writes wonderful music, especially good for Christmastim e (several albums available with Cambridge Singers). Listening to his compositions and arrangements generally leaves one with a happy, warm and fuzzy feeling. It is quite distinct from --- and complementar y to --- the sense of mystery and awe one often imparted by works of some of the more "contemporar y " sounding (cerebral on occasion?) sacred choral composers -- I'm thinking, for example of Lauridsen, Part... and I'm out of space.
