Johnny Colon master trombone player, and more importantly founder of the Jonny Colon East Harlem Music School in El Barrio. Johnny's revised version of Boogaloo Blues here, kicking it up a few notches to salsa, gives some respect to the original 1966 version of the same song: for all you old school lovers, remember LSD has a hold on me a cha cha, on the Cotique label.
Johnny never made the commercial success of Palmieri, but still the man can swing. Honorable. No relation to Willie Colon.
Guguanco es lo que hay!!!!!
I love salsa but. The bugalu is scoring big time with me

The very best latin musicccccc
Is this musican Willie Colon's Sibling? Anyone?
Amazing style! very smooth. The more I listen to 70s Salsa, the more I appreciate the 60s sounds that it stemmed from.
nice man where did this come from? I like
Very cute, Pandora! After playing the conga-line classic "Los Dandies" on the Alegre All-Stars station, you threw in "The Line Dance" from Johnny's "Boogaloo Bluesman". Nice.

How many of you remember the three shows over WKCR-89.9FM in the New York City & Tri-state area produced by their on-air personalitie s : C a r l o s DeLeon & "Cocinando", Carlos DeJesus & "Alma Latina" and Jose "Cheo" Diaz with the "Mambo Machine".

Boogaloo is the heart soul of salsa, they are both indelible.
I REMEMBER SYMPHONY SID WELL. I REMEMBER WHEN HE GAVE HIS LAST BROADCAST BEFORE HE LEFT FOR THE FLORIDA KEYS. I ALSO REMEMBER LISTENING TO THE ROGER DAWSON SHOW. THOSE WERE THE DAYS WHEN WE EXPLORED THE ROOTS OF LATIN MUSIC. LOVE THE MUSIC ON A SNOWY COLD DAY. KEEP THEM COMING.!!!!!

I was living in the Bronx when I was introduced to the salsa dancing and the boogaloo by my dad. I am a big fan of boogaloo and the old salsa. As I was growing up in the Bronx in Wilkins Ave and Crotona Park I was hooked on boogaloo. God Bless all you who still listen to the great boogaloos.
nilda718
Wow! I grew up in Hartford CT and learn to enjoy this music in my teens. It is awesome and really takes you back. THANK YOU for the memories, Pandora!

I purchased this CD and I love it. I really didn't listen to many latin songs when I was growing up, but now that I am in the beginning of my golden years I am enjoying a lot of the Spanish music I missed in the past. I don't know that much about Johnny Colon or any of the other artist in this album - but I sure am enjoying the music - thank you Pandora.
old school
TO LULU SELBY: WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO SUPPLY INFORMATION ABOUT TROMBONE MUSICIAN ROBERT LEMUS???? I KNOW THAT HE PLAYED TROMBONE WITH JOHNNY COLON, BUT BEYOND THAT, I CANNOT FIND ANY INFORMATION ABOUT HIM. MORE INFORMATION WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
Robert Lemus was such a contributing factor to this album, and such much more he traveled with james brown abroad, and to south Africa went on to do studio work with many 60's rock stars. a real nyc musician of real depth.....
IN NEW YORK CITY IN 1966, JOHNNY COLON HAD A BIG HIT WITH HIS BOOGALOO BLUES ALBUM. JOHNNY WAS CATAPULTED INTO THE DRIVING SEAT OF THIS NEW MUSIC CRAZE. LATIN BOOGALOO HAD COME TO NEW YORK. JOHNNY COLON PLAYED AN INDELIBLE PART IN THE CREATION OF THIS NEW STYLE, CUTTING THREE SUPERB ALBUMS IN THE LATE 1960'S AND THEN THREE EXCELLENT POST-BOOGALO O LPS IN THE 1970'S.
MIXING LATIN RHYTHMS WITH AN R&B SENSIBILITY AND OFTEN SINGING IN ENGLISH, JOHNNY COLON, PETE "MR. BOOGALOO" RODRIGUEZ, GEORGE GUZMAN, JOEY PASTRANA AND OTHER BOOGALOO GROUPS BROKE OUT FROM THE TRADITIONALI S T S ' GRIP THAT WAS STIFLING HISPANIC MUSIC IN NEW YORK. FOR 3 HOT YEARS, THESE BOOGALOO CONJUNTOS DOMINATED THE LATIN SCENE IN NEW YORK CITY.
TO ANSWER DANNY BALANCIO'S QUESTION ABOUT BARRY ROGERS PERFORMING WITH JOHNNY COLON ON THE NEW YORK MAMBO TRACK, THE MUSICIANS PERFORMING ON TROMBONE ARE ROBERT LEMUS-FIRST & SECOND TROMBONE, ANGELO RODRIGUEZ-SE C O N D TROMBONE & JOHNNY COLON-PIANO, TROMBONE & VOCAL. THERE WAS NO MENTION OF BARRY ROGERS PERFORMING ON TROMBONE.
UNLIKE MANY OF HIS BOOGALOO CONTEMPORARI E S , JOHNNY COLON WAS AN EXTREMELY VERSATILE MUSICIAN, A MULTI-INSTRU M E N T A L I S T , AND SINGER. COTIQUE RECORDS (JOHNNY COLON'S RECORDED FOR COTIQUE) BECAME ONE OF THE FINEST LATIN SOUL LABELS IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 1960'S.
BORN IN NEW YORK CITY'S EL BARRIO, LEARNING GUITAR, SAXOPHONE, PIANO AND BASS WHILE IN HIS TEENS. JOHNNY COLON DISCOVERED LATIN JAZZ IN PART THROUGH MUSICIAN CAL TJADER, AND BECAME A WELL RECOGNIZED PIANIST, COMPOSER, AND ARRANGER. IN 1972, JOHNNY COLON FOUNDED THE EAST HARLEM MUSIC SCHOOL, THE FIRST AND ONLY MUSIC SCHOOL IN THE WORLD DEVOTED TOTALLY TO TEACHING "SALSA".
I swear I'm hearing Barry Rogers in the bone section on the New York Mambo track. Can someone confirm this?
