Indeed this is an alternative version cooked up to mollify the Brits so they could sell the record over there. The only problem is it's complete nonsense because the battle was real and Ol' Hickory (Andrew Jackson) and the rebels did rout the Brits. It was during the War of 1812. Yeah, we kicked their butts and the American version is the true one.

Is There an american version? I really don't care about the Political/Cu l t u r a l / R e l i g i o u s aspects of songs BTW.

This is the first time I heard this version. Music 379 is correct. It's the same song sung from the British perspective. The "rebels" referred to are the Americans who were rebelling against English rule.
Report as inappropriate
Yes, you guys are right this is the civil war version because the only "rebels" ever in the whole history of the world were the South in the Civil War. The fact that 1814 (the time stated in the song) wasn't in the C.W., or that Pakenham (the Col. mentioned in the song) was commanding the British at the battle of N.O., or that "Old Hickory" was Andrew Jackson and not any C.W. figure none of those things effect it. Never mind that there was no such battle in the C.W..
