Johnny Smith

Guitarist Johnny Smith will always be best remembered for his 1952 hit recording of "Moonlight in Vermont," a mellow ballad that also features Stan Getz. Smith, whose chordal-oriented style was self-taught, originally played trumpet, violin, and viola before switching to guitar. A studio musician from 1947 on, Smith's impressive technique and quiet sound made him in great demand even before "Moonlight" and, although he never had another hit, he was a popular attraction throughout the 1950s. After moving to Colorado in the 1960s he opened a music store, taught, and maintained a lower profile, occasionally recording in New York. Smith died in June 2013 at his home in Colorado Springs at 90 years of age. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

Bought a Johnny Smith Award model Guild guitar. 1961. Guild produced a limited number of these guitars after Johnny won a talent contest. Johnny wanted the factory foreman to make it a different way and the factory foreman said no. Johnny then was contacted by Gibson who did whatever he wanted. And the rest as they say is history....R I P J. S.

My family bought a beautiful Gibson Acoustic guitar from Johnny Smith Music in Colorado Springs CO in the 1960's and my sister took lessons from him. We were saddened to hear of his passing; he was an amazing artist!

Beautiful and masterful playing here. Truly one of the un-sung greats. You that knew and lived close to him - I envy you that.

my dad played Johnny's albums all the time. My guitar teacher knew him and sounded just like him.He had the same guitar and would play for me and my dad when my lessons were over.My teacher 's name was John Cucci back in NJ. He was so good that when the Tonight show's regular guitar player was ill they would call him to fill-in. He had a music store too.
