Jon Oliva's Pain

Jon Oliva was born in 1960. He began playing music at an early age, but did not settle on an instrument for quite some time. He eventually signed on to a band called Metropolis at the age of 17, playing both guitar and keyboards. The group broke up in 1978. Eventually, Oliva formed a group called Avatar, which became Savatage. In addition, but has managed to find time to record with the Savatage-related projects Doctor Butcher and Trans Siberian Orchestra. In 2003 he formed the group Jon Oliva's Pain, which has released four studio albums. In 2013 he released his debut solo album, Raise the Curtain, under the moniker Oliva. ~ Gary Hill, Rovi

Modern Savatage!
Just selfish I know but I am kinda glad that they're not as popular. Mainstream popularity changes bands in the things that are s***.
...& thanks guys... I need to get " Poets & Madmen ". I've Never heard it.
Jon Oliva & Paul O'Neill ARE Savatage.

He also left Trans-Siberi a n Orchestra too I think last year. Would be nice if Savatage got back together
I have to make an amendment to my last comment... The only lead vocals Jon Provided on Edge Of Thorns was on Skraggys Tomb, that was him pulling the cork on a bottle of Jack Daniels, taking a drink and saying "Ahhhhh "... on a side note, Jon wound up in rehab for alcohol abuse not long after. The record Jon made his full return on was Poets And Madmen, aka the last Savatage album...... so far.
Following Jon's "departure" from Savatage after Streets A Rock Opera he did not sing on another 'Tage album until Dead Winter Dead. Though he did play nearly every bit of Handful Of Rain, he did not sing on the album, nor did he sing on Edge Of Thorns. He sang two songs on DWD and two songs on The Wake Of Magellan. Though Jon was technically not in the band, he did play keys/piano one every 'Tags album. After Zak Stevens left the band, Jon stepped back in as full time vocalist on Poets And Madme
It's funny reading some of your comments, but some of you are missing facts. Jon did appear on the Edge of Thorns Cd as sharing vocals and background a at least two tracks. Also, no one mentioned that is was John who did all the music tracks on the Handful of Rain cd
Never heard of this band. I'm a fan of Savatage though.
Jon Oliva was on 'Edge of Thorns'. He only played the piano and keyboards, he didn't sing on the album.
Jon I love what you have done. I greatly miss Chris. Are we ever going to hear the original Avatar songs that were recorded? This reminds me so much of those days in Clearwater.. .
fast becoming a favorite metal band its good structured and still heavy

Jon wasn't on 'Edge of Thorns'. His brother was an incredible lead guitarist(al s o Savatage) that died wayyy to early!!
He played an instrument ot wrote on every Savatage album. He did not sing on a few.
For the fans, Doctor Butcher got a re-release and is up on Amazon or maybe some torrent sites. I got it, well worth the $.
bocult
He's not in EVERY Savatage Album...I can't think of the title off hand...I've got it laying around here somewhere. Anyway, I know of at least one SAV. album he's not in. I think that's what got me confused.
Jon is still alive and kicking, but his brother Criss Oliva (original guitarist for Savatage) was killed in 1993...that might be who you're thinking of.
I finally saw Jon perform this past fall after missing Savatage by a few years, best time I've had for a long while.
And Still the Orchestra Plays.....

I thought this guy was dead.(?) Great voice, didn't know about these albums....

Savatage lives!!! John is an amazing musician, vocalist, and writer. I doesn't matter if is't John's Pain, Doctor Butcher, or TSO, it's still Savatage to me.
Rock On!!!!!
John Olivia is a great metal front man. Sires, The Dungeons are Calling, and Hall of the Mountain King are great albums.
I agree that Savatage should get a lot more respect, as so many other metal bands that are great and make great music that go unnoticed. Such a shame that there is such great music out there that only an elite few know about.
One of the best voices of all time, Jon is awesome, I still crank up Sirens and Hall of the Mountain King, great just f-n great
JOHN IS LIKE A FAMILY MEMBER WHEN I HEAR HIS VOICE IT COMFORTS ME AWSOME

I know it really ticks you off when bands don't get the credit they deserve, then bands like puddle of mud, korn, nickleback etc. come along and play the same old repitive crap and get tons of radio play.
i've never seen Olivia or one of his groups get the credit they deserve. that guy is friggin' talented.
Jon Olivia's work is simply amazing. He remains one of my absolute favorite musicians and artists. Savatage (his previous band) is simply legendary in the early metal arena. Great stuff.
