Jonatha Brooke

Singer/songwriter/guitarist Jonatha Brooke began issuing albums that merged folk and pop during the early 1990s, first as a member of a female duo named the Story and later as a solo artist. Brooke formed the Story (originally called "Jonatha & Jennifer" during the duo's early years) along with another vocalist, Jennifer Kimball, who attended Massachusetts' Amherst College with Brooke in the early '80s. Despite playing regular local gigs during their college career, the girls never issued any recordings and took a break after graduation, during which time Brooke joined a dance troupe. But by the end of the '80s, the group had re-formed under a new moniker, the Story, and issued a demo called Over Oceans in 1989. The Story was promptly signed to the independent Green Linnet label, which issued the duo's debut album, Grace in Gravity, in 1991. It wasn't long before Elektra Records expressed interest in the band, in turn reissuing their debut the same year, as well as a sophomore effort, The Angel in the House, two years later.

By 1994, however, the Story had split up for good and Brooke began pursuing a solo career. Despite Kimball's absence, Brooke's 1995 solo debut, Plumb, was nevertheless credited to Jonatha Brooke & the Story. Brooke was the sole creditor beginning with 1997's 10 Cent Wings, which also marked a shift from her earlier folk-pop material to a more radio-friendly style. This shift continued with such additional releases as 1999's Live and 2001's Steady Pull, the latter of which was co-produced by Brooke and renowned studioman Bob Clearmountain (known for his work with Bryan Adams, the Rolling Stones, the Corrs, and Hall & Oates, among others). Beginning in the late '90s, Brooke's albums were issued via her very own record label, Bad Dog.

In 2002, Brooke performed a pair of songs on Disney's Return to Never Land soundtrack, contributing an original composition ("I'll Try") and a cover ("The Second Star to the Right"). Two years later, she performed a set of ten shows at the Public Theater in New York, the highlights of which were collected for the 2006 release of Live in New York, complete with a DVD of the concert. Careful What You Wish For followed in 2007, and Brooke subsequently delved into Woody Guthrie's lyric journals for her follow-up effort. Released in 2008, The Works paired her original music with Guthrie's previously unheard lyrics. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi

I first saw her with Jennifer as the Story at the Ann Arbor Folk Festival in early 90's. She totally had me at Dog Dreams.
There are few more powerful, entertaining , music-making storytellers than Jonatha Brooke. With the exception of The Circus CD, her catalog is unique and spectacular, beginning with The Story and continuing today. Her DVD/CD package recorded in NY is the prime example - She rocks, she can be as mellow as a gentle summer breeze, and throughout, her voice is mesmerizing and her music (played with a crack band or solo) is totally thrilling and engaging. What a fine but underappreci a t e d talent!

First heard Jonatha thru WDET in Detroit. Then saw her live in Ann Arbor back in the mid 90's. Been listening ever since. Best album is Angel in the House, best track on that album: So Much Mine.

LOVE her sound! I'll be on the listen for more of her tunes.

There is very little not to like about Ms Brooke... when she was living around Boston we had a lot more chances to see her live, both with the Story, with her ex-husband in a great band, then sometimes just solo in a bookstore, the Iron Horse in Northampton, or a dozen other places. She is gracious, very talented singer and songwriter, a very unique guitarist, and should be a lot more well known than it seems she is.
connieL (see below) is exactly correct.. i wrote a piece once after watching her perform. :)

ditto nelsontiger1 3 . and experiencing jonatha perform is something special. fulfilling on a spiritual level.
It's uncanny how much she sounds like Ginny Owens. She has a lovely voice. =3
I, too, first found Jonatha Brooke with The Story in the early 90's and have been a big fan ever since then buying each new CD when it is released. Just love her sound and haunting music. It gets stuck in your head...in a good way!
Don't know if y'all noticed this but Jonatha sang the very cool theme song for the TV series The Dollhouse. Cool sound.

I love love love Jonatha Brooke! I've seen her a few times and she's fantastic live. Check her out, you will not be sorry!!
Taste of Danger...I love that song...
just recently heard Jonatha Brooke for the first time...
Shes great
I hadn't heard of her before I began listening to Pandora. What a fantastic find.
Warm, heated, uplifting, inspiring, reaching the deep parts of emotion with song are just a few of the things that come to mind about Jonathan Brooke.

Her range and depth of song writing speak in so many way to life’s ups and downs. Not in a merely depressing way, but in a real and impactful manor that makes one think.

Her voice - like velvet - soft and comforting. Her lyrics for Woodie Guthrie's work are truly masterful and impactful when mixed with his words.

I have been in love with Jonatha Brooke ever since hearing The Story's "Angel in the House" about 15 years ago (it has been my very favorite pop album ever since). Her voice ("So many colors!" to quote one of my friends), her songwriting, her musicianship are all so incredible - I still can't figure out why she hasn't found a wider audience. If you don't "get" a song or album the first time, listen to it again - she WILL both reach you and teach you. An indispensabl e musical treasure!!!
We own all of these albums, except the live one. They are all great in their own ways. The new one -- The Works -- with reworkings of Woodie Guthrie songs is really good. We find something special on each album, and they are constantly in our CD rotation at home. What a great artist.
Her re-working of "Eye in the Sky" ads so much dimension to the piece. I wasn't a fan of the Alan Parsons Project but now I am mesmerized by this song.

To meet her in person was a treat with my son Sam and I!

Jonatha spent a good part of a half hour with my
son talking to him under a tent in the rain!.....So down to earth !

She was promoting "10 cent wings " at the time or As she joaked and said it sounded like I sung "tits and wings" ! Fan's forever ! George & Sam Scarmeas
