Underground supergroup Kalas (pronounced "Kah-laas") collects the talents of several respected Bay Area indie figures in guitarists Andy Branton (Econochrist, Samain) and Paul Kott (Cruevo, High Tone Son of a B**ch), drummer Scott Plumb (Cruevo), bassist Brad Reynolds, and stepping out as guitar-less frontman for the first time in his career, Matt Pike, of High on Fire and Sleep fame. Originating in 2003, the project gradually took shape over the years and demos, eventually signing with New York's Tee Pee Records and issuing their eponymous postmodern metal debut (combining the seismic alt-doom of Neurosis with more traditional metal and hard rock sources such as Iron Maiden and Thin Lizzy) in April 2006. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi
Just saw HoF in KC with Mastodon and Dethklok. Matt Pike came out shirtless and half his buttcrack showing and proceeded to TEAR IT UP! This Kalas s**t is damn good too.
Damn. Pandora is freaking great. Must admit I was completely oblivious to these guys, despite being a big HoF and Sleep fan. Cannot wait to get this album. I definitely heard a lot of Maiden influence in the track Monuments to Ruin. Damn, damn, damn...another killer project involving Matt Pike - the guy can do no wrong.
WRONG, WRONG, WRONG - This is not standard fair "standard" to what exactly?
This is bluesy, hard rock....not as metal as HOF, but moody, dark and bluesy for sure with a straight up hard rock sound.
ME LIKEY. Hope they make more music under Kalas.
