Kansas

Fusing the complexity of British prog rock with an American heartland sound representative of their name, Kansas were among the most popular bands of the late '70s; though typically dismissed by critics, many of the group's hits remain staples of AOR radio play lists to this day. Formed in Topeka in 1970, the founding members of the group -- guitarist Kerry Livgren, bassist Dave Hope, and drummer Phil Ehart -- first played together while in high school; with the 1971 addition of classically trained violinist Robbie Steinhardt, they changed their name to White Clover, reverting back to the Kansas moniker for good upon the 1972 arrivals of vocalist/keyboardist Steve Walsh and guitarist Richard Williams. The group spent the early part of the decade touring relentlessly and struggling for recognition; initially, their mix of boogie and prog rock baffled club patrons, but in due time they established a strong enough following to win a record deal with the Kirshner label.

Kansas' self-titled debut LP appeared in 1974; while only mildly successful, the group toured behind it tirelessly, and their fan base grew to the point that their third effort, 1975's Masque, sold a quarter of a million copies. In 1976, Leftoverture truly catapulted Kansas to stardom. On the strength of the smash hit "Carry On Wayward Son," the album reached the Top Five and sold over three million copies. 1977's Point of Know Return was even more successful, spawning the monster hit "Dust in the Wind." While the 1978 live LP Two for the Show struggled to break the Top 40, its studio follow-up, Monolith, the band's first self-produced effort, reached the Top Ten. That same year, Walsh issued a solo record, Schemer-Dreamer.

In the wake of 1980's Audio-Visions, Kansas began to splinter; both Hope and Livgren became born-again Christians, the latter issuing the solo venture Seeds of Change, and their newfound spirituality caused divisions within the band's ranks. Walsh soon quit to form a new band, Streets; the remaining members forged on without him, tapping vocalist John Elefante as his replacement. The first Kansas LP without Walsh, 1982's Vinyl Confessions, launched the hit "Play the Game Tonight," but after only one more album, 1983's Drastic Measures, they disbanded. In 1986, however, Kansas re-formed around Ehart, Williams, and Walsh; adding the famed guitarist Steve Morse as well as bassist Billy Greer, the refurbished band debuted with the album Power, scoring a Top 20 hit with "All I Wanted." When the follow-up, 1988's In the Spirit of Things, failed to hit, seven years passed before the release of their next effort, Freaks of Nature. Always Never the Same followed in 1998. Seeing the return of founder singer/songwriter Kerry Livgren, Somewhere to Elsewhere was released in 2000. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

Everytime I hear Carry on My Wayward Son I think of Supernatural . Love this band!
Saw them several months ago at OC Fairgrounds and they rocked. Walsh now looks like the old dude on the cover of Leftoverture ( s p ? ) . Definitely a flashback experience.
Masque album my favorite. Two Cents Worth my all-time favorite song, or is it Mysteries and Mayhem? Oh heck, so many. Saw them several times at the LA Forum in the mid to late 70's before Walsh left. They were never the same for me after that, even after Walsh came back. Never was a fan of their ballads and radio hits. Will never forget Walsh doing handstands on the keyboards while playing.
I saw them at Freedom Hall-Louisvi l l e , KY in 1978 with Pablo Cruise opening for them
Saw Kansas as White Clover back in the early 70's. Used to see them in Ellenwood KS at the old Opera House. Still like their sound.
Back then a lot of bands were named after cities

saw them live in the summer of 79, I know I was there, the rest is kinda hazy.
I blame my father for making me addicted to Kansas :P
I saw them play their 1st concert as a headliner outside of their home state just after the release of Leftoverture at the now gone Astor Theater in Reading, Pa. in Oct. 1976! For me, they never surpassed their 1st three records.

I saw these guys at Winterland Ballroom (SanFran) in their first tour ever. A band named Earthquake opened; and I believe Jefferson Airplane (Starship?) was the headliner. It was the next to last show (or near to..) ever at Winterland. Kansas absolutely rocked! Hello Joe & Connie Cooper, Phyllis Tomlinson!

This Kansas is great. The group out touring now as Kansas SUCKS A**!!
Kansas is exceptional in concert...sa w them last year or the year before with Styx and Foreigner. If you have opportunity see Kansas, you wont be disappointed
Be warned: I saw Kansas in 1979 - one of the best concerts I ever saw.
Saw them reformed in the early 00's - so awful. One of those things you can't unsee.
How the hell can you hate Kansas?

I have seen Kansas 3 times in concert and they were always fantatice! Rock on!!!
I totally agree with RoadRunner, Brooks, et.al. Dust in the Wind, Carry On, barely touch the talent of this great band. They truely epitomize Progressive Rock. Although my favorite album is Point of No Return
get all of there older albums prior to Point of No Return and really dig in to them. You'll be hooked.
a true masterpiece the song dust in the wind.
I love how their music tells life stories and how it brings what rock really is. Nowadays there many rock bands that are fantastic, you can't hear on the radio. Kansas should be played and heard all the time.
Always known for Dust in the Wind, but not many went beyond that song to hear what they were really about. These guys ROCKED THE HOUSE if you dug deeper into their catalog. Many, many fast tempo complex numbers. This was a ROCK band, not a BALLAD band. Always take the time to listen to a bands entire album and don't be fooled by the stooges that decide which songs will be played on the radio. I have found countless unheard of bands that made fantastic music that never made it to the public ear.
So sad that dust in the wind and carry on while great songs in their own right...were not even close to any of the masterpieces this band has written. e.g. Apercu, Magnum Opus( truly, their; great work) Lightnings hand, Cheyenne Anthem, etc... Great artist are rarely appreciated in their own time.
At 52, and the heart of my youth, all I ask is to have Carry, played at my funeral.
Dean: There are newer bands like the old proggers! Check out Porcupine Tree, The Mars Volta (not to be confused with the dance group without the The), Hosemobile-- You just have to search to find them. But Kansas is my favorite.

I didn't care too much about them, but after seeing them live...they were pretty dang good
hey mwinters9, way to scold someone 2 months after the fact.

have followed them since their start..seen them live 42 times...the last time was this past fall at houghton college in upstate ny with a symphony...t h e critics are morons...thi s is one of the most complex acts in modern day rock music...they are geniuses...
Nevermind... . d u h . . . . f o u n d it....
