Kat Edmonson

Jazz chanteuse Kat Edmonson may have had no formal training, but the young vocalist possesses one of the most authentic voices to ever croon selections from the Great American Songbook. One listen to the Houston native's ethereal purr is enough to hook even the most casual music fan, and her song "Lucky" was featured on the MTV series United States of Tara. It was Edmonson's mother's record collection and old movies that initially stirred her artistic soul, but having a career in music wasn't initially a given. After a stint at college in Charleston, South Carolina, Edmonson returned to Texas and decided to follow the musical call. An audition for American Idol in 2002 landed Edmonson a trip to Hollywood and a spot in the Top 48. Her Idol dreams ended abruptly when judge Randy Jackson told the singer she didn't "look like a star." After her exit from Idol, Edmonson began honing her chops at open-mike nights and eventually made the transition to full-time performer. Her debut album, 2009's Take to the Sky, was a mix of classic and modern songs, and proved Edmonson was more than ready for her jazz ascension. Three years later, she returned with the Kickstarter-funded Way Down Low. In 2014, Edmonson released the Mitchell Froom-produced The Big Picture. ~ Todd Sterling

Amazing that this instrument of hers is not yet fully recognized for the talent that it truly is... The voice is not made in a true artist - it simply is IE: Whitney Houston, Nat King Cole, and Judy Garland, who also made it to the top without formal training, it's called talent for a reason.

I like this. Did not know she was a competitor on a show until I read the comments below.
If God has something for you; it is yours...that is all you have to know and all you have to believe.
What do you think you need to be happy in this life? If you are meant to be a background person, an extra in the lives of others, can you be okay with that? You are always special to the Father and that is why you are here.

Randy blew this one! She has a unique entertaining voice. I would not hesitate to see her if she's anywhere near El Paso, Texas. Love her!

Beautiful, unique voice, and also a really nice lady. My daughter and I met her after a Mountain Stage performance and she made a lovely impression. Way Down Low is one of those albums you can listen to over and over.

Whispering Grass, like so many of Kat's songs, is incredibly inventive, beautifully subtle and unique - how many lyrics talk about blabbering trees? Kat appeared in Minneapolis a year or so ago, and I count that as one of the notable disappointme n t s in my life because I missed it - Kat, please come back to the Dakota - pretty please?!

The first time I saw or heard her was when she performed on Austin City Limits--she was a smash! Now, I include her in my list of artist stations on Pandora. Reading her Pandora bio, that Randy Jackson on Idol is an idiot. I think she is good looking, and a fun, entertaining songstress. Kat, you can be my Diva, anytime. I'll take back what I said about Randy Jackson--he' s just plain stupid.

I, too, enjoy the many commercials that benefit from her voice, but when she sings Nobody Knows That on ACL (and YouTube), and I can see and hear the pain in the last two lines, it's almost like I get something in my eye every time. Not many singers can do that - thank you, Kat.

Believe she was recently on Austin City Limits - very nice. . .

What a BRILLIANT artist!!! Not sure how I missed getting blown away by Kat Edmonson a lot sooner. She has popped up occasionally on other Pandora stations that I have, and I've liked her very much, but it wasn't until I caught her recent performance on ACL, during a sleepless night, that I was completely blown away! She now has yet another adoring fan in me, and I can't wait to see her in concert, ASAP!!

P.S. Had I known Houston was hiding this little gem, I might never have moved away.

On, by the way, I just discovered Kat on Austin City Limits...WOW . . . . W O W . I just didn't want that performance to end. How refreshing, what a singer, what a wonderful stylist...I am so sorry it took so long to know she was out there. I will not miss another of her performances .

Kat's a purist...a throwback in a modern era. The supreme minimalist in a music culture burdened with over production and noise. Just listen to her...you can hear every single syllable, every nuance, and you just are draw into her charming web. The listener is persuaded that Kat feels every note and every word. She is a great beginning, middle and end to my day. I look forward to seeing her in person asap.
