Kenneth J. Alford

February 21, 1881 - May 15, 1945
born in Ratcliff, London, composed during the Modern period
After playing the cornet, piano and organ in the Royal Irish Regiment and serving in India, Frederick Joseph RRicketts became a student bandmaster at the Royal Military School of Music. He became the bandmaster for the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in 1908. He also served as director of music for the Royal Marines. Ricketts composed under his mother's maiden name, Alford, and is remembered as one of the finest composers of military marches. He was a master in instrumentation and possessed a clear melodic sense. His marches often contain inventive counter melodies, and Ricketts' abilities are considered to be the rival of that of Sousa. Colonel Bogey is his best known work. ~ Lynn Vought, Rovi

When my dad's brass band, Mark Foutch's Brass Band, performed this in the '60's and '70's the arrangement used was titled Colonel Bogey On Parade. The band was made up each year of members of the Graduate School from the School of Music at the University of Illinois , Urbana-Champ a i g n . A lot of the graduates returned each year summer. I guess because it was so much fun.

Always reminds me of The Bridge Over the River Kwai.

tabbnic4 & d...vocho - You both realize this composer is BRITISH (born in London ENGLAND), so consequently the music written by him is BRITISH in origin as well. So no, not only in America.

@tabbnic4 - It's great, only in America. Semper Fidelis.

JPS knew the proper application of euphoniums in music. Much better than bag pipes IMHO.
