Kenny Rankin

A pop and standards singer during his long career, Kenny Rankin debuted in 1967 with his first album, Mind Dusters, which featured the soft rock hit "Peaceful." Over the course of the early '70s, Rankin slowly built up a following with a steady stream of records and performances that balanced originals, new songs, and standards. As the decade drew to a close, he began to return to his singer/songwriter roots, particularly on After the Roses, his 1980 debut for Atlantic Records. He continued to perform during the '80s, but he only recorded sporadically. In 1991, he recorded a pair of albums, Hiding in Myself and Because of You, for two separate labels. Three years later, he signed with Private Music and released Professional Dreamer, an album that found him concentrating on standards. That record was followed in 1997 by Here in My Heart, which had a Brazilian flavor. Throughout the rest of the '90s, Rankin focused on touring and, in 1999, he issued The Bottom Line Encore Collection, his first live recording in two decades. ~ Scott Yanow & Stephen Thomas Erlewine

I had seen Kenny Rankin perform many times over the years. A few months before he passed away, I saw him sing in Piermont, NY. Like a shy little groupy, I walked up to him and told him how I loved his music and asked him to do a song that my ex used to sing to me. He kindly sang Marie, as I blubbered through the entire number. I was devastated to hear of his passing but so glad I got up the nerve to speak to him and ask him to sing it. He had the voice of an angel and now he is one. RIP.

What a strange world we live in. We tend to wait until the death of a musical genius before we express our love and appreciation for them. This guy should have been at the TOP from the get go. Shame on us. Oh how sweet the sound!

Kenny Rankin has got to be one of the most under-estima t e d , under-recogn i z e d , and under-estima t e d artists of the 20th Century. He had an uncanny ability to reinterpret standards in a totally new colorful way and deliver them with unmistakable taste and depth. Song after song is awe-striking . When we lost him, we lost a great talent. But his music will live on - and on. Paul W. Sammarco, President, P&J Records.

A grossly underrated talent, Kenny Rankin should have found a much wider following. He had one of the finest voices and styles of the later 20th century. Thank goodness his music will live always.

I was captivated the first time I saw Kenny Rankin at a small venue in the East Village, NYC. I admit to being a devoted groupie, he was an amazing talent. There will be few with his ability and musical talents. I treasure his LPs in my collection.

First saw Kenny in 1973 at a Cal Poly Pomona 1-man show and saw him many times since. He is missed - I could really use a Rankin fix right now!

I've seen Kenny Rankin in concert more times than I can count. Once a year at least. During the last few years of concerts he would speak of how he finally came to grips with his ego and was grateful to all that helped him to acheive and bring him to where is was at that time. I've only just now been able to listen to his music again since his sudden death. I've met and spoke to him at all o his concerts and am blessed to have those memories and many signed cassettes and cds. I truly still mis

Kenny's Album was given to me by a cousin oh way back when. Always found his voice sultry, sexy and heartfelt. I thought I would someday get a chance to see him live in concert. The years passed, and then I found that he too had passed. A beautiful vocal and emotional legacy left behind.

I was sooo sad to hear of Kenny's passing one year after he passed! How could I have not known? He was and is my favorite artist. I realized that he passed around the same time as Michael Jackson. All attention maybe was turned to Michael's passing. I have a good cry now and then over Kenny!

What is the date of his death? I didn't know he had passed until I heard his music on Pandora. I always thought he had the purest and clearest voice I had ever heard. Now when I listen to his music I get goosebumps and it seems he looking down and singing from above.
