King Crimson

If there is one group that embodies both the best and the worst aspects of progressive rock (from the standpoints of both supporters and detractors), it is King Crimson. During its first five years of existence from 1969 through 1974, in a variety of different lineups, this band led by guitar/Mellotron virtuoso Robert Fripp broke lots of new ground in prog rock, stretching both the language and structure of the music into realms of jazz and classical. Somehow, the group's challenging debut album, In the Court of the Crimson King, caught the public's collective ear at the right moment and hit number five in England. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi

This band in all incarnations remains the at the forefront of the genre!
Heavy metal meets Igor Stravinski. A masterpiece The bio is terrible
The bio is garbage. King Crimson is God.

This was the first prog rock album. Ever. It arguably also contains one of the first, if not the first, metal songs. Ever. One could write a dissertation on the effects KC has had on the history of music. Whoever wrote this bio is clueless.

The more I see that bio, the more I think that Pandora NEEDS to get a new one! It's just not right! King Crimson and Fripp deserve better. That's not the way that most people think of them. Not the people that really knew who they were and what they accomplished through the life of the band and the man that made it happen!
I saw KC at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago, I think it was 1971, they opened up for Humble Pie and the ticket was $6.50. Great concert.
King Crimson provided some of the most interesting progressive rock music of it's day but I have a hard time calling it legendary as it was a revolving door of members. It had 14 different musicians during 1969-1974 with the only constant being Robert Fripp. Definitely influential but can't go as far as legendary.

Just checked the KC bio on allmusic.com . It's much longer than the one here, so pandora is not merely re-posting. Also, 1969 through 1974 is six years, not five. That mistake is not on allmusic.com . Trivial, yes, but it does prove that pandora is editing the allmusic bios. Makes you wonder why, especially in this case where they are clearly diminishing the importance of this legendary band!

Don't feel too bad leclaire5139 7 . I had a chance to see them at the Marina off Miami Beach in the early 70s but had no dough had no wheels and couldn't find anyone who would go. But I did see them twice also in the early 80s. It made me a much more appreciative follower of theirs.
Saw them twice...Disc i p l i n e Tour Chicago...Th r a k tour Chicago. Envy you older guys who saw the 70's lineups.
Tailgator... I was at the same concert. Auditorium Theater was a great venue.
King Crimson takes to places that nobody else can!!!
king crimson is the most underrated band ever
I've seen them many times, one of the tightest groups ever. Saw their fairwell tour in Chicago (1974?) on windowpayne at the Auditorium Theater ( one of the top 3 acousticaly perfect ); front band was the introduction of Robin Trower .........eno u g h said.
Fripp is to music what God is to man.
should ALWAYS be BRUFORD!!!!, but everyone else is damn good too.
baramos
Wish they had the full version of Starless--th e best part is how Fripp and company build to that crescendo in the rest of the song!
karmacreatio n s
Fripp was to Progressive rock as John Mayall was to British Blues Awesome!

tmccarter0 is correct. this bio is poor. Wolfgangs Vault is a great place to get good info, hear great old concert audio & video. Thumbs up to TMC
tmccarter0
Check out the reviews on Wolfgang's Vault. They are, for the most part, very accurate and informative, as compared to this drek. Also, it would be useful to see the line-up for the bands when I click on the album.
Everytime I see a Punk Guy comment, which is often, I want to smash my screen to get rid of his dumb avatar.
King Crimson, f**king King Crimson. What else can I say? F**king amazing band, these dudes broke so much ground it's almost stupid.
Pleading to Pandora won't help. They don't write the bios, just port them from All Music Guide-- which tends to be favorable only toward mainstream artists. An ignorant institution who reflects the closed minds of the masses. So what do you expect?
swjonesmi
Again, Shame, Shame, Shame!
swjonesmi
After reading some of the more recent comments, I am speechless! Robert Fripp and ALL of the people that joined King Crimson through the years helped to establish new forms of music. They tried new techniques and sounds and helped to shape MANY sounds and techniques that we enjoy today! He STILL influences many bands (AND sits in!). Somebody that actually knows ANYTHING about Fripp should REALLY write a REAL bio!!!
swjonesmi
Shame, shame, shame!!!!!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
swjonesmi
Has this bio gotten smaller????? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
A few of the comments I've read are from people who just don't get it. Has a musician I realize that Robert Fripp would surround himself with musicians and songwriters of differnt lineups. Each takeing on a form or version of the band unlike the previous lineup. Only developing a style if a certain lineup lasted more than one album. Fripp would inspire these artest
to perform there best on each KC effort. Its easy to see wich lineups work,
until someone is ready to move on. Yes some albums are b

I think that all of the early King Crimson albums are great. Concerning the negative comment below it can take some time to appreciate some of these works. It took me a long time to get into Lizard and Islands. They are very deep compositions and it can take many listenings to appreciate them. I recommend listening to them repeatedly and most importantly all the way through every time. If you do this you will be richly rewarded when the light finally comes on.

pmfith must have written the bio above... poor insight and irrelevent comments change a hard-core fan, NOT... There's no accounting for the taste of purely unsolicited negativity towards the enjoyment of others. King Crimson is safe in their status as a premiere, trend setting musical ensemble...d e s p i t e the, obviously educated, comments of one so inspired to turn us all on to their concept of 'real music'. All things evolve and move on, the way Greg Lake did early on..as should all others.
pmfith
You want a band that had awesome musicians and wrote amazingly intricate compositions : Happy the Man. THAT's prog-rock.
pmfith
As a hard-core progressive rock listener since '76, I'll never, ever understand the appeal of old King Crimson. The 2nd album to Lark's Tongues in Aspic were horrific... Every album seemed to have at least one track of pure noise (instrumenta l masturbation ) which, for some reason, made people think they were 'avant guard' or something. Larks Tongue and Starless had a few good tracks, but other than that... Once Belew appeared - it was awesome.

King Crimson was pivotal in my formative musical career over 40 years ago. Since then, Robert especially has gone continually forward in his ability to push the envelope of what it means to play music. Frippertroni c s taught me what it means to compose in terms of thought processes. He has laid out a musical landscape that will take many musicians decades to climb over and the biography above is like comparing his super-nova to a reed rustling in a quiet breeze. They deserve a better tribute.
Rock musicians with talent...isn ' t that something?? You don't see/hear that much these days.
Yes, please get a bio up that dose justice to these great musicians (past and present).
gdwhiz
'Having just read the very informative bios of Brian Eno and soft machine this bio on KIng Crimson is a travesty that needs to be redeemed. Please Pandora quick to your last.
trashmenow
Much more needs to be said. And no reference to Greg Lake, or Roger Fripp's subsequent career?
mdacbm
Gotta agree...thes e guys should have a page at least
Very short/ underexpress i v e bio. The band held too many cards in the deck of changes to the music world to get a bio that is as miniscule as this.
bottom.end
C'Mon Pandora - y'all can do better than this bio!! Give Robert Fripp his due, as he has continuously influenced artists far longer than most musicians.
OK--Here's my biography of The Beatles:

A quartet that enjoyed some chart success in the 60s and early 70s. Nothing has been heard from any of the members since the group's demise.
Long live Fripp...and like ak690 says, this bio sucks. KC is one of the most truly progressive bands ever, in all their incarnations , especially from Discipline forward...av a n t garde, rock, electric and totally awesome live.

Wow that bio is beyond terrible ... anyone who listens to their music knows better !!!
That should be my epitaph
Saw them in 1971in Plymouth. England, at the Guild Hall. Been a favorite since Court. Kind of an Anglophile, favorite band being Caravan.
This band is in a league of it's own. They have been imitated -poorly- but no one else has ever captured the dark mystery the way they have.
Ya considering they were a huge influence on the psych rock movement
My college roommate was a big King Crimson fan; I latched onto Robert Fripp b/c I liked Brian Eno. All this means is that I know but a thumbnail about KC, but agree with the others that this is the prog rock group to wax about and Pandora, you coulda done better.
timotzar
The cover art for Islands depicted in the discography is not what I remember. The bio does no justice to such an influential band.
This is a very limited bio
