The King's Singers

The King's Singers is an entertaining, six-man vocal ensemble which tours the world singing a variety of repertory to appreciative listeners.

The group was formed in 1965 by a few of the choral scholars of the Choir of King's College, Cambridge. They had decided to make a private recording of some of the secular music they had been working on, calling themselves "Schola Cantorum Pro Musica Profana in Cantabridgiense." They commissioned 100 pressings to keep and give to friends and families. From this start, the six (Martin Lane, Alastair Hume, Neil Jenkins, Richard Salter, Simon Carrington, and Brian Kay) decided to undertake a tour, and booked themselves as "Six Choral Scholars from King's College." The tour was a success, and a new name -- the King's Singers, suggested by an Argo Records executive -- was chosen. Its first concert officially took place on May 1, 1968. By 1971, the King's Singers had drawn considerable attention in England and began making their first recordings. By Appointment and The King's Music appeared in 1971 and 1972, respectively. In the '80s, the King's Singers experienced its first personnel changes, but the group's popularity remained high, bolstered by a heavy touring schedule that even included an appearance on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. Then-recent recordings, like their All at Once Well Met: English Madrigals (1985) and Beatles Connection (1986), achieved impressive sales.

The group continues to entertain audiences with its music, maintaining its meticulous style through numerous changes in its lineup. The longest serving member of the group was Alastair Hume, who remained with the King's Singers until the end of the 1992 season. Several former members, such as Nigel Short and Gabriel Crouch, have established successful solo careers. Members of the 2016-2017 season include: Patrick Dunachie and Timothy Wayne-Wright, countertenors; Julian Gregory, tenor; Christopher Bruerton and Christopher Gabbitas, baritones; and Jonathan Howard, bass.

The King's Singers have made several dozen recordings of a wide variety of music for several labels, everything from madrigals and motets to Japanese folk songs to a cappella arrangements of pop songs. It has also commissioned a large number of new compositions from composers such as Luciano Berio, György Ligeti, Toru Takemitsu, James MacMillan, and Gabriela Lena Frank. It also teaches master classes and summer programs for young musicians. In 2009, the King's Singers won a Grammy award for its recording Simple Gifts, on the Signum label. It was also part of Eric Whitacre's 2012 Grammy-winning recording Light & Gold. The King's Singers continue to perform, frequently to sold-out audiences, and make recordings that are not only critically admired, but also much-loved by fans. ~ Rovi Staff

Do you have 'The King's Singers Night Songs and Chanson D'amour albums?

I was very fortunate - to hear them live do as a new piece for our group of choral director's summer retreat. There wasn't a sound at the end until one male voice said, Bravo, bravo and we broke into a rousing applause. They were back again about 2 years later and, along with The King's Singers, we were treated to The Swingle Singers during the same week. I traveled with my H.S students to hear them whenever they were near. Memories are a wonderful thing!! Oh, and by the way, this was Iowa!

I grew up listening to the King's Singers since they were my father's favorite group. Now that my father has passed away I treasure their music even more since they remind me of my Dad and his love of music.

I've been a fan of these folks for longer than I care to admit. I saw them once in concert and they sang a piece entitled "Ah Robin". I have never been able to find this piece. Is anyone familiar with it?

I first heard the King's Singers on PBS singing, "You are the New Day." I had no idea who they were, but it had been in my head through bunches of pregnancies and births and I'd sing the song to my newborn babies. The other night I googled the lyrics and discovered who they are! I can't get enough of them!

The King's Singers have been a favorite of mine since the 80's. They did a Christmas special on PBS in the early 90's. Their voices were incredible.. . e s p e c i a l l y "Honeysuckle and the Bindweed" and "the Stately Homes of England...(v e r y funny lyrics). Would love to see more from them on Pandora, classic choral renditions and the fun stuff too!!

Try The Ten Tenors if you like these guys (unfortunate l y , though, they're not yet on Pandora). They're Australian, while The King's Singer's are British, and both are all-male a cappella groups.
