While debating the merits of analog vs. digital recording in a Seattle pub, guitarist Chris Martin and bassist Lucy Atkinson were interrupted by the bartender, drummer Dave Weeks. He said, definitively, that analog was superior; thus Kinski came into being. This same spontaneity would come to define their multi-layered noise-rock, reminiscent of Sonic Youth at their most experimental. Kinski began playing live in 1998. By the summer of 1999, the trio had released its first record, Space Launch for Frenchie. With six songs clocking in at 45 minutes, it inevitably sparked some debate of its own: EP or LP? Later that year, the band explored newer textures in their live set, and friend Matthew Reid Schwartz (guitar, keyboards) was added to the lineup. Kinski has toured with Mainliner (Japan), Hovercraft, and Silkworm. In 2001, their follow-up, Be Gentle with the Warm Turtle, arrived. Two years later, the group returned with their Sub Pop debut, Airs Above Your Station. A split release with Acid Mothers Temple was also issued in 2003. A West Coast tour supporting Mission of Burma coincided with Kinski's fourth album, Don't Climb on and Take the Holy Water, in spring 2004. Alpine Static followed in 2005. 2007's Down Below It's Chaos added a '70s hard rock vibe and vocals to their intense drones. Following a string of collaborative releases, including a split 7" with Bardo Pond, sixth album Cosy Moments arrived on Kill Rock Stars in 2013, ending relatively dormant five year stretch between albums. ~ Eric J. As Sonic Youth is my all time favorite band, I can hear a likeness to them. However, Kinski kicks it on their own merits. NO BAND is completely original, except for the first one, of course. (Sorry Beatles fans.)
well they arent exactly trying to hide the sonic youth inspriation...i mean f**king daydream intonation is not a cooincidence. i like them.

This is my first exposure to Kinski and I have to say, I'm real f**king impressed. I must own all Kinski recordings now. I definitely see the Sonic Youth comparison, but they still have their own way of sounding that sets them apart. Good stuff.
I found them through Tristeza and Explosions in the Sky. And I'm glad their type of music still exist today that can be enjoyed by all music fans that shows their creativity, innovation, and individuality. This is at the heart of what music represents; self-expression by any medium.

please don't leave comments about a particular album on the BAND page. we don't know which is your favorite recording ; ) Kinski is by all measures an amazing band
FAVORITE recording from my FAVORITE band. MY BEEF: Kinski doesn't tour. Send them a KIND e-mail encouraging them to bring their music to a city (preferably Madison or Chicago) near you!!
Love it! Takes me back to the "acid rock" days of the late 60's/early 70's. Seems the younger generation has pounced on this genre and taken it in a new and wondrous direction.
can you say '' what in the f**k are you talking about '' are you trying to say kinski sounds like sonic youth, well they both have people in the bands that play musical instruments...not even close...
How can everyone be unaware of such a masterpiece? No musicians I know have ever heard of them before, man, they don't know what they are missing. Great stuff here.
From what I read, there is less violet (shortest wavelength) than blue in the spectrum, tho a bigger % of the violet would be scattered than blue. Indeed our eyes are less sensitive to purples, but the fact that the sky doesn't appear purple is more due to the mix of greens and reds that end up being scattered to balance out the amount of purples. Thus producing a grand average of blue ... until sunset :)
True my good man, the sky is not blue. What we see is merely a mix of the spectrum balanced by which wavelengths get scattered the most (shorter wavelengths) attenuated with the ones which get scattered the least (longer wavelengths).

Actually the sky isn't blue, either. The sky contains 50 times more purple (violet) in it then blue. The human eye just has not evolved to the point of being able to see the wavelength of purple as clearly as blue, therefore, appears blue. ;) Look it up.
A lot of people like to compare bands to Sonic Youth, but I've noticed that many of these followers aren't even experimenting with alternate guitar tunings! That is exactly what made Sonic Youth unique. I wonder why there aren't more bands using alternate tunings out there.

you know this is in sonic boom's collection. they're more spacemen 3 than sonic youth, rockin' the reverb like every good band should.

I hear a certain element of Josh Homme's better "jam band" s**t in this bands music....
Kinski is indeed good however
2+2 would equal 3 if it wasn't 4.
Water would be dry if it wasn't wet.
Kinski would only suck in an inverse universe where all things in existence ... do not exist.
they sound TOO MUCH like sonic youth,TOO MUCH.
Experimental ? NOT!!
