The Knitters

The Knitters was a one-off country side project of the famed Los Angeles punk band X featuring the group's vocalist Exene Cervenka, singer/bassist John Doe, and drummer D.J. Bonebrake as well as the Blasters' guitarist Dave Alvin. (Ironically, when original X guitar player Billy Zoom left the band in 1986, it was Alvin who replaced him, albeit briefly.) The Knitters' lone LP, 1985's Poor Little Critter on the Road, was a collection of originals, covers, and acoustic revampings of earlier X material, redone in a variety of country-based styles running from swing to traditional. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

Could be maybe the most important acoustic band in the USA. Too bad there isn't more work and more exposure.
If Julie Andrews grew up on the West coast of the states in the 70's & 80's and still felt compelled to share a few of her favorite things, undoubtedly the sound of John & Exene crooning distressed harmonies would fall right in line with In & Out burgers, animal beers and too much time lost taking razor blades to clothing scored at the local thrift shop. X is my favoirte band. And I loved the Knitter's first recording for it's honest, raw, and LIVE feel. Unfortunatel y "Modern Sounds" has little of the qualities of the first recording. There is really nothing wrong with this recording, it just isn't up to the quality of EVERYTHING else these artists have done, individually and collectively . I'd have to give it a C+
