boncer3 has a good point. when i saw robert plant in 2005, every other tune in the set was a Zep song, but they were all the traditional songs that Zep covered, which he did interesting versions of, including gallows pole. What a show that was!
This song (like "When the Levee Breaks" on Led Zep IV) is not an original Led Zeppelin song, but a cover of a much older blues song. For both, contrasting the LZ version with the original is interesting. "When the Levee Breaks" was Memphis Minnie; "Gallows Pole" was Leadbelly, and later Fred Gerlach.
Honestly...I've never heard this song....I am a huge Zep fan but feel so upset that I've never heard this song...or at least REALLY heard this song....Fantastic...Great start to my vacation..
Incredible song - but I confess to blasphemy - I like the "Unledded" version with M. Lee on drums better - the joy of this 1970 tune getting blasted live wins over the orig studio. Robert and Jimmy getting pushed by their younger band - the tune rocks.
