These are just a few of the hundreds of attributes cataloged for this track by the Music Genome Project.
Believe it or not pink floyd, black sabbath, beatles, all had a song or two similar in sound and mood, funny its all british groups, even the stones had a song similar I think, all great bands, but this is a sweet song no doubt.
Black Mountain Side is just one of the songs that contribute to the mysticism of Zep. No other bands were writing songs of this nature around that time period. This is why I put Jimmy Page in the top of the most influential musicians of all time.
Alice in chains uses the "DADGAD" tuning in a few of their songs as well. Listen to "Over now". Although the song isnt nearly as complex as this fine Zep song.

It's "DADGAD," or D modal tuning, an alternate tuning most associated with Celtic music, though it has also found use in rock and other genres. Instead of the standard EADGBE tuning, the six guitar strings are tuned, from low to high, DADGAD. When tuning to DADGAD from standard tuning, this is accomplished by tuning the first, second and sixth strings down a whole tone (two half-steps).
Still one of the most difficult songs to play on the guitar; it shows Jimmy Page's skill. The tuning is some strange open tuning, that's one of the tricks to this song.
