I was going to say that this song is to Led Zeppelin as Embryonic Journey is to Jefferson Airplane... then I actually saw it in the list of similar tracks. Both great songs!
This is why Led Zeppelin is so GREAT! They can rock as hard as you want, then write a great blues song, and then do a fantastic song like this. I always stop what I am doing and just listen to this song. MAGNIFICENT!!!
EMS77: The basic riff, and variations on it, can be heard in JP's work as far back as his mid-60's sideman role with the Yardbirds. Maybe he borrowed from Tony Iommi, maybe not. It was clearly a very creative time and place.
yes, awkward ronald. good call. he is playing in open C. i have the guitar tabs. they came out in a guitar mag in the 90's. love this tune. simple and beautiful
This song is very reminiscent of Black Sabbath's "Fluff" (or is it "Orchid" I'm thinking of....) by Tony Iommi, which was released years earlier and conveys the same beautiful, haunting sound. I think Zep borrowed heavily.
I think it's even better live. How Jimmy Page does it- making something so beautiful and sad and yet so happy at the same time- will always amaze me. live version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xHvnMC7KFg
