The Lettermen's close-harmony pop songs with light and easy arrangements made them quite a successful group with adult audiences during the 1960s, when changing styles and tastes made many older listeners feel just a bit left behind in the music world. Formed in 1960 by singer Tony Butala, along with two students from Brigham Young University, Jim Pike and Bob Engemann, the Lettermen recorded without success for about a year until they signed to Capitol Records. The group's first single for Capitol, "The Way You Look Tonight," did very well on the pop charts, and its follow-up, "When I Fall in Love," reached the Top Ten in late 1961. Though the group only reached that plateau one more time, with the 1968 medley "Goin' Out of My Head/Can't Take My Eyes Off You" (the same year Jim's brother Gary Pike stepped in for Engemann), successful album sales to adult listeners and popular concert tours kept the group going long after many of their similar contemporaries had died off. Another Pike brother, Donny, replaced Jim in 1974, and the Lettermen formed their own Alfa Omega Records in 1979, sporadically releasing albums of new material even into the 1990s. Jim Pike and Bob Engemann later formed Reunion (with Ric de Azevedo), a group that released several albums for Collectables. ~ John Bush, Rovi
In the 60's they made the college concert tour. Great voices and arrangements. Simpler times, and they were made because of music like this.

My wife and I love the Lettermen's music. Although their live performances do include some new songs, Tony is smart to keep doing the songs that made them a hit back in the 60's. They continue to pack out the music halls where they perform and hope they will continue doing that for many years to come.
Nanette could not have said it any better. Being a babyboomer from way back with time now to sometimes just listen, contentment with the memories they bring reigns...Hail to Pandora for being so accessible ;-)

My folks turned me on the to Lettermen. Great group with great taste and nice arrangements.
I love The Lettermen!!! Their songs always transports me to the happy, carefree days ....when you're young and in love for the first time....My heart still skip a beat at times when I hear their songs!!
Check out a trio called "Reunion", Two of them are former Lettermen. They are still doing concerts. We booked them for a fundraiser here in San Clemente two years ago and our audience loved them.
does anyone have a record named
There is no Greater Love? My record is so worn out that I don't
want to play it - and there songs are not on Pandora.

The Lettermen are without a doubt tops on my list. I started listening to them as a teenager in the 60s...and have been to a few concerts. Attended one about a month ago and I was not disappointed. They still have that marvelous sound I love.
The Sandpipers were in this same musical scene as the Lettermen but with a lady in their ranks could do harmonies without songs sounding so similar.

I'd love to find the album from the 60's that has the 3 of them on the cover in a wheat field. It had "You'll Never Walk Alone," "I Believe," (with orchestra, not a acapello (sp))
