The son of Crowded House and Split Enz front man Neil Finn, Liam Finn succeeded in making a name for himself, first as the teenage frontman of the quirky rock band Betchadupa and, several years later, as a talented solo artist in his own right. Formed after he met bandmate Matt Eccles during a beach holiday with his family, Betchadupa recorded two EPs and two albums -- The Alphabetchadupa in 2002 and Aiming for Your Head in 2004 -- before taking an informal break, with Finn returning to New Zealand while the rest of the band resided in London.
In 2007, Finn released his debut solo album, I'll Be Lightning. The album was recorded in Neil Finn's Roundhead Studios, using analog equipment to give it the spontaneous feeling of a demo recording. Most of the instruments were played solely by Liam, a sound he re-created during his following tour by moving from instrument to instrument, looping each part with an effects pedal while bandmate E.J. Barnes sang backup vocals. Popularly received in New Zealand and Australia, I'll Be Lightning, as well as the 2009 EP Champagne in Seashells, cemented Liam Finn's status as a formidable talent, and he returned two years later with a poised, poppy sophomore release, FOMO. ~ Jody Macgregor, Rovi
He rocked Kansas City before Crowded House took the stage. A real treat.

First time I'd heard of this guy was live in Baltimore when he opened for Vedder...VERY different genre from Vedder, but in an EXTREMELY good way...I'd see him as the main performance any day...

I also want to add that to appreciate Liam, it's best to see him live. The album is good, but you don't get to see how he layers each instrument. During a live show he does this and it is really amazing. Check him out on youtube for some live videos.

I saw Liam live when he opened for Eddie Vedder. I was completely amazed by what I heard and saw. Never hearing of him before this, I watched him bounce around the stage building the song as he looped one instrument after another. He is like a mad scientist and is a musical genius in my opinion. A very talented man that plays his music 'in the moment'. Taking small 'mistakes' (since his method is more like improv) and turning them into fantastic musical elements. Definitely worth listening to.
Saw Neil's kid performing in Neil's band at the Fillmore in SF in '98 (the "Try Whisltling This" tour). He looked to be all of about 11 then, but was already poised and at home as a stage performer. An unbelievable show by Neil Finn made all the more impressive by the presence of his younger prodigy. Could a pop be prouder? Indeed, foreshadowing to great things to come for Liam at the time.
