Life Without Buildings

Named after a Japan B-side, Life Without Buildings actually drew a little more from several post-punk bands and another that their name seemed to acknowledge: Talking Heads. Formed during the summer of 1999 at the Glasgow School of Art, Will Bradley (drums), Chris Evans (bass), Robert Johnston (guitar), and Sue Tompkins (vocals) decided to fuse their talents out of their admiration for other proto- and post-punk bands like Television, ESG, and early PiL. They also reminded many of the late-'70s Rough Trade sound, which was well-known for a deep roster that largely featured jerky/martial rhythms, sparse instrumentation, and sung/spoken vocals. So it made perfect sense that the Rough Trade-affiliated Tugboat label would ask the band to record a single after their first London gig. Released in March of 2000, "The Leanover" b/w "New Town" secured the band a deal with the label. Numerous radio sessions ensued, including one for Steve Lamacq's Evening Sessions on the BBC. A second single was released in June, and a third followed shortly thereafter. The band's debut full-length, Any Other City, was released in late February of 2001 in the U.K.; DC/Baltimore 2012 issued it months later in the States. Numerous positive comparisons were drawn, almost to the point of becoming an albatross for the group; despite this, Life Without Buildings were every bit a modern pop band, not at all retro in the manner of a garage band. Well apart from other Scottish acts of the time like Travis and Arab Strap -- only Johnston was Scottish, anyhow -- Life Without Buildings clearly offered something that music was lacking in the early 2000s. Unfortunately, the group broke up in 2002. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi

I love this band... Life Without Buildings... . Would you please consider getting back together?!?! I would love to sit in on a concert. I don't know, be back stage party with you all afterwards for a feww days or so...<><
I Love This Band!!! Pandora turned me on to them, I ate them up. This is exactly why I have Pandora. I was so sorry to hear they broke up in 2002, I thought 2007. I can't contact the band to let them know how much I love their music. I have always kept them on my Pandora, and always will. I have listened for years and not let them know. Anywho, I am so glad I have found this band, even though they broke up, someone was smart enough to put them on Pandora<><
Funny how a Glasgow band's only release on Pandora is a live album compiled from a gig in a pub in Sydney. And inexplicable that Sue Tompkins doesn't have success in music now.
Damn shame. It is hard to keep a good band together...e s p e c i a l l y when money gets thrown into the picture..... .
hehm.
Pretty hot, a new convert has been found!
Has the singer done anything since? I checked their myspace and no mention of it. Its a shame her voice isn't utilized by any bands.
can we please have the studio album too, please?
i had no idea - i'm verrrry happy about this!!
Just heard Sorrow live and really impressed. They sound great live. The singer has some real charisma on stage that's for sure.
Detroit garage bands, the white stripes, the bell-rays, the detroit cobras and then this group. all are great.

i love this band
Blimey - I didn't realise the drummer was that old.
