Loggins & Messina

Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina were the most successful pop/rock duo of the first half of the '70s. Loggins was a staff songwriter who had recently enjoyed success with a group of songs recorded by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band when he came to the attention of Messina, a record producer and former member of Buffalo Springfield and Poco. Messina agreed to produce Loggins' first album, but somewhere along the way it became a duo effort that was released in 1972 under the title Kenny Loggins with Jim Messina Sittin' In. The album was a gold-seller that stayed in the charts more than two years.

In the next four years, Loggins & Messina released a series of gold or platinum albums, most of which hit the Top Ten. They were all played in a buoyant country-rock style with an accomplished band. Loggins & Messina (1972) featured the retro-rock hit "Your Mama Don't Dance." Full Sail (1973), On Stage (a double live album, 1974), and Mother Lode (1974) all hit the Top Ten. So Fine was an album of '50s cover songs. The pair's last new studio album, Native Sons, came out at the start of 1976.

Loggins & Messina split for two solo careers by the end of that year, their early catalog completed by a greatest-hits album, Best of Friends, and a live record, Finale. The duo reunited in 2005 and hit the road for a summer tour while the compilation The Best: Sittin' in Again was arriving in stores. The tour itself was documented on Live: Sittin' in Again at Santa Barbara Bowl, which appeared late in the year. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi

L & M were the best duo ever! Many memories of these guys. Saw them in Richmond, VA in the 70's. They had a huge screen behind them with sailing scenes. Really impressed me!

Saw them ..around 1975 or 1976 in an outdoor amphitheater that was in the hills of Santa Cruz.. If I recall correctly it was tucked in a little off the road and there we were in a Redwood grove.. awesome.. Someone said it was owned by the H.A.'s or one of the bay area bands. So long ago I wish I had a video tape of that day. My memory fades.

Absolutely a fantastic classic from ‘real' musicians from a much more peaceful and loving era, still resonates all that was good and all that was possible. Peace and God bless all.

The world taps their feet at the sound of their music. One of my saddest days was attending a concert for Kenny Loggins in Utah when he fell and cracked a couple ribs prior to performance and we had to go home with out a sound. Still have him in my favorites.

Loggins and Messina were my favorite male duo artists during the 70s. Native Sons is my favorite album. I first heard them when we returned to the States from Okinawa, Japan. We had been overseas for almost 3 years without any communicatio n from our family except thur US mail and 3 Mars Radio Calls. Thomas was a Vietnamese Linguist; I worked at Marine Corps Base, Camp Smedley D. Butler. We returned home with two sons & all we knew for sure is that we would be together for the rest of our lives.

One of my all time greatest concert memories was in Knoxville, TN (the fall of 1972?) when Jim Croce and the Doobie Brothers opened for L&M.

How about a rock comedy movie about this duo's adventures. Looking at the album cover of sittin in I think that Ashton Kutcher and Sean William Scott (stiffler) look alot like that album cover.

You will be kissed on the nearest possible Friday by the love of your life. Tomorrow will be the best day ofyour life. However if you don't post this you will die in 2 days. Now you've started reading so don't stop. This is so scary. Put this on at least 5 songs in 143 minutes. When done press f6 and your lovers name will come on the screen in big letters. This is scary cause it really works

I think I listened to Be Free within hours after the record first came to the store in town. My first acoustic trip outside of traditional music and never looked back after that. I still can't get enough of that opening of my senses to new sounds. Led me in so many wonderful directions.
