Loney Dear

Apparently, lightning does, in fact, strike twice. In exactly the same way that indie chamber folk auteur Jens Lekman was discovered -- his homemade CD-Rs falling into the right hands -- Lekman's Swedish compatriot Emil Svanängen ended up signed to a respected American indie label when someone in Sub Pop's Seattle offices happened upon the talented singer/songwriter's early homemade discs through the Internet. Hailing from the small city of Jonkoping, Sweden, Svanängen first began recording homemade, overdubbed tapes of delicate, folkish indie pop (with shades of acts like Belle & Sebastian, Neutral Milk Hotel, and the Magnetic Fields) in the early 2000s. As Loney, Dear, Svanängen self-released three homemade CD-Rs through his website: River Fontana Redux, Citadel Band, and Solange. As buzz developed through MP3 blogs and other new media manifestations, Sub Pop offered Svanängen a contact in 2006. The first proper Loney, Dear album, Loney, Noir, was released in early 2007, as Svanängen put together a full-band lineup of the group for his first international tour. Dear John arrived in 2009, followed by Hall Music in 2011, the latter of which found the multi-instrumentalist mining even more ornate instrumentation, inspired by recent tours with various orchestras in Sweden. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi

I'll never understand why some musicians are effusively praised by both the public and the critics, while others (like Loney Dear and For Stars) are forced to wither away in obscurity. I'm convinced that all a band needs in order to succeed is a gimmick. Whether it's Arcade Fire's inane political activism or She and Him's Hollywood cross-promot i o n or Lady GaGa's sex-peddling , the only thing that seems to promote an indie act either to major-label promotion or underground stardom is a gimmick.

This guy's certainly got a knack for melody!
Saw them open for Of Montreal earlier this year. Really cool layering ability for a two-piece group. I actually met him in the pit during Of Montreal's set. Cool dude
I LOVE Loney,Dear. I saw him/them as opening act for Andrew Bird, bought the CD, and never looked back. Have every Loney, Dear song on my ipod and love them all. Wish he'd come back to this area again.
My family gives lots of CDs for holiday gifts. My wife hears something she likes, jots it down, finds the album, gives it as a gift. I become one lucky recipient, take it to work, listen to it, listen to it again, listen to it a third time. A week later, I can't get it out of my mind. Loney, Dear's Loney, Noir did this for me. I am so hooked, I've become like one of the 12 disciples, evangelizing this guy to everyone I see! This from a 52 year-old!
He's absolutely brilliant!
