Most definitely an early pro LBGT anthem. Lou after all was a butt pirate himself, and in between burglaring turds, and pillow biting he would write about what he knew i.e. Riding down the Hershey highway.

So is this one of the first pro lgbt anthems in popular culture?

When you dissect this classic song you find some really deep meanings. I love Lou Reed.

Song is a nod to Andy Warhol's factory people, mostly transvestite s :
Holly = Holly Woodlawn
Candy = Candy Darling
Little joe = Joe Dallesandro
Sugar plum fairy = ? At least two possibilitie s , one being a drug dealer
Jackie = Jackie Curtis

No, that line isn't as innocent as a lot of you make it out to be. Who knows what the intent was, but it was a very antiquated adjective in the early 1970s (I believe) & hardly inoffensive. Lou was nothing if not confrontatio n a l however & pleasing the majority of people never seemed to be his primary objective.

One of the best songs in the entire history of the universe. Minimalist, urban folk rock. Say wha?

Why does the part about the colored girls tick you off? I don't find it racist or anything. He just points out a trend in songs of the time.
Report as inappropriate
Here's a little trivia - the album 'Transformer ' that this song was originally released on was produced by David Bowie.

This song is SO funny. I can't listen to it without laughing- it just has that effect on me. I don't laugh when he says, "and the colored girls go"...That's the part that ticks me off! The rest of the song is good though!
