Joaquín Rodrigo

November 22, 1901 - July 6, 1999
born in Sagunto, Valencia, Spain, composed during the Modern period
Joaquín Rodrigo (1901-1999) was a major 20th century Spanish composer most celebrated for his Concerto de Aranjuez for guitar and orchestra. Blind since childhood, Rodrigo was trained in music and taken to Paris, where he studied with Paul Dukas and became friends with Manuel de Falla. The Spanish Civil War brought hardship to Rodrigo in the late '30s, but after the 1940s his fortunes improved and he became internationally recognized. Commissions from famous musicians for new concertos increased Rodrigo's renown, and awards from the governments of Spain and France eased his retirement. He was raised to the Spanish nobility in 1991. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi

Probably the best known piece for classical guitar ever written. Such a beautiful, haunting melody. Listen over and over.

Also beautiful when played primarily on horns, with flugle horn solo.

This is music of rare melodic beauty, composed in a century in which the human spirit was nearly extinguished . He reflects the triumph of all that is best about Spain: virtuosity, humanity, intimacy, love, and the divine. Que maravilla! Gracias a Espana, que nos ha dado tanto.

Concerto de Aranjuéz is definitelly his very best! But then, he was commemoratin g the strugle by the citizenry against the French at that location: Aranjuéz. Cncierto para un Gentil hombre is most sublime, though
¡Viva su música con todo lo noble que esta inspira.

Fantasía Para Un Gentilhombre , For Guitar & Orchestra: I. Villano Y Ricercare: Adagietto; Andante Moderato rivals Concerto de Aranjuez in in its awesomeness.

One of the most recognizable concertos is the Aranjuez. It is easily as known as any other classic B's 5th, V's seasons. That said there are many other Rodrigo works worth a listen.

this is a beautiful piece of art. You can feel every single note played...I just love it!

...and I've always been particularly fond of Bream's recording of the C de A. Played with such love for the instrument, the piece, such reverence for the composer, for Spain. Not bad for a crotchety old Brit, eh? So thanks, Sr. Rodrigo, for the piece that has inspired so many--from Miles Davis (Sketches of Spain) to (ugh) Rod McKuen (Winds of Change).

How I would love to have some talent in just playing the guitar. He was marvelous and blessed. Someone to envy.
