Martha And The Muffins

Based in Toronto, Martha and the Muffins initially comprised Martha Johnson (vocals, keyboards), Martha Ladly (vocals, keyboards, trombone), guitarist Mark Gane, bassist Carl Finkle, drummer Tim Gane, and saxophonist Andy Haas. The group formed in 1977 and, on the strength of their debut independent single, "Insect Love"/"Suburban Dream," were signed by Virgin U.K. The band's debut album, Metro Music, appeared in 1980, led by "Echo Beach," which would become a new wave classic. After 1981's This Is the Ice Age, and Danseparc two years later, Johnson and Gane moved the outfit to England and recorded Mystery Walk (1984) and The World Is a Ball (1986) as M+M. From then on, Martha and the Muffins recorded sporadically, releasing Modern Lullaby in 1992 and Delicate in 2010. ~ John Bush, Rovi

This Is the Ice Age is one of the great lost albums. Some of it is Eno-esque, some is great pop, all of it is brilliant. Sax and guitar work are exceptional.

M+M...Melts in your ear...Not inyour hand
I'd love to see the Albums Danceparc and Mystery Walk added to the Pandora line up...great band, fab tunes...
We used to see them at The Ritz in NYC all the time.
Thanks Damian, Bob Here, and Weasel for spinning Martha and the Muffins!
Why do we never hear M&M on 80s Alt Radio formats (Pandora or XM/Sirius)? Were they only a D.C WHFS band?

Martha & the muffins were/are a huge band for me - the innovative beauty of the music (Daniel Lanois hypnotised me long before he went to work on U2) but most of all because of a "big picture" of what the music and band stood for - the struggle of an individual in the face of an absurd world, from "be blase" to "this is the ice age" and "swimming" and almost all of Dansparc. Mystery Walk was a huge disappointme n t for me, but I love the other records.

yes... they were popular in DC. Must have been the influence of the original WHFS. What a great station. Too bad nothing like it has existed in this town for decades it seems. A major influence on the local scene which is still strong.

Mark Gane is a seriously underrated guitarist. His infectious riffs propelled this band's intensity and moodiness, and influenced a whole generation of players. The band was popular in Washington, D.C. in the 1980's when I was working as a bike courier. Chauncey Brothers made mix tapes that included several of their songs. Their music helped me make it through many a day when the cold winds blew across the Potomac River. Thank You M&M for making my day brighter!
Reminded me a lot of Morphine as well. May have just been the saxophone.
