Martin Sexton

Martin Sexton was one of the most talked-about arrivals on the "new folk" acoustic music scene. The guitarist, singer, and songwriter has an amazing vocal range and makes effective use of it on his recordings and in his live shows. Unlike so many other contemporary singer/songwriters, his vocal style can be described as truly soulful, combining the best qualities of singers like Van Morrison, Al Green, Aaron Neville, and Otis Redding.

Sexton, a self-taught guitarist and singer, was raised in a family of 14 and formed his first rock & roll band in eighth grade. In high school he was in a profusion of garage bands, playing the music of the Beatles, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and Led Zeppelin. He left his home in Syracuse, NY -- and the rock & roll life -- in 1988 and headed for Boston, encouraged by what he'd heard about the coffeehouse scene in that city. Despite the ultra-competitive nature of the Boston scene, with too many folksingers and too few coffeehouses, Sexton quickly rose through the ranks. He began playing his brand of soul-filled folk music around Boston's open-mike nights and street corners in 1989.

In 1991 he released his own record, In the Journey, in cassette format, and much of the material on this and Black Sheep, his 1996 debut for Eastern Front Records, is autobiographical in nature, concerning his life on the road. Remarkably, Sexton sold 15,000 copies of his cassette-only album through the strength of his live shows and grueling tours around the U.S. In 1994, Sexton won the National Academy of Songwriters' Artist of the Year Award. By 1996, Sexton was sharing stages with Art Garfunkel, Jackson Browne, and John Hiatt on tours. Sexton subsequently signed a deal with Atlantic Records, releasing The American in 1998 and Wonder Bar in 2000. Sexton continued to tour, building a sizable following throughout the States. He released the Christmas-themed Camp Holiday in November 2005, followed by the intriguing Seeds in 2007. Sugarcoating, produced by Sexton and Crit Harmon, appeared in 2010, followed by the politically charged, five track EP Fall Like Rain in 2012. ~ Richard Skelly, Rovi

One of the songwriting giants, of any genre, the real deal, vocals and hooks that can move mountains of emotions. I am always on the edge of my seat waiting for the next splash of paint! Absolutely a hero, of mine. Thom

I have known Martin personally ever since H.S. Occasionally we would jam...he always took more risks with trying different sounds....li k e using his voice to replicate actual instruments. . . s c a t t i n g llike noone's business, pretending to be different characters, as if the song was a play..always trying to sweep and blend his melodies and real life experiences in a way most of us can relate to..His songs are stories of our life. Though I was never as good as Marty, he jams with anyone, can find bea

Martin's coming back to Park City in March. A can't miss show. He rocked the Canyons last March and will do again. Any where in the West and I will attend. He is that great!
I too saw Martin in Lawrence, but much longer ago when he was playing in some very small venues. I remember closing my eyes at one point during the show and swearing that the spirit of Billie Holiday was coming through Martin. He has the most amazing vocal range of any singer I have seen in the past 20 years. He is one of the best.
Saw Martin open for Josh Ritter 6 months ago in Lawrence, KS. Maybe the best live performance I've ever seen.

Have experienced Martins musicality twice in Flagstaff and once in Scottsdale. In my experience, there is no live parallel. Thanks for sharing your gift Martin :)

He was here in Park City and I am kicking myself for not going to see him!

No other singer/songw r i t e r has the depth or range he has in his music! When I see him play, he is usually by himself, yet I find myself wondering where are the other instruments! He has the ability to make you think there is a bass and sometimes even a drum mixed in there with his guitar. I can't for the life of me figure out how it is he is not a super star - just as good, if not better than those that are!
First caught Marty back in late 90s w/ Joe B, and have been seeing him ever since whenever he's w/in a 4 hour drive... Unmatched talent. Btw, Whatever happened to Joe?

Wonderful music! I graduated from high school with Marty.
van morrison and tim hardin had a son: martin sexton
I have been wanting to see him for years. I live in Mass and evidently missed him on the Boston scene. I didnt even know who he was until a few years ago. I am hard pressed to find a favorite among his music but the first album I bought, Seeds has got to be at the top of any list I might come up with.

I have known Marty for quite a few years now. His live shows are incredible, every single time. He has an amazing soul and ability to captivate all of us around him. To Marty: thanks for putting Purple Rain on the new CD. And thanks for playing it for Shaun @ Lupo's a couple of years back!!! - Lili
Saw him @ Gathering of the Vibes weekend in Bridgeport. Great set.
Just saw Marty in Boise ID last night, the culmination of a fifteen year dream to see him play in my hometown. I pulled together eight friends and we had an incredible time.

Favorite songs: 'Hallelujah, ' 'In the Journey,' 'Happy,' 'Glory Bound,' 'Wasted,' 'Candy,' '13 Step Boogie,' 'Women & Wine,' and 'So Long Susanna.'
I saw Martin Sexton open for John Mayer and Guster in Milwaukee in July 2002. His sound is so eerily familiar that I kept thinking I had heard him before when he took the stage. Great sound. Elegantly simply and vaguely complex.
a fabulous discovery! Thanks pandora!
I don't like folk music. But I make an exception Martin Sexton
is the only folk artist, blues singer I like. Enough said.
One of the few true artists of today, A true credit to his art.
absolutely the soundtrack to my heaven.
Loving his music. When other accoustics get old, he is a breath of fresh air!
