Mastodon

Atlanta-based sludge/stoner/alternative metal outfit Mastodon formed in 1999 around the talents of guitarist Bill Kelliher, drummer Bränn Dailor, bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders, and guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds. One of the more notable New Wave of American Heavy Metal acts, a genre spawned in the mid-'90s by bands like Pantera, Biohazard, and Machine Head, Mastodon's innovative, lyrically astute blend of progressive metal, grindcore, and hardcore helped position the band as one of the preeminent metal acts of the early 21st century.

Formed out of a mutual admiration for the Melvins, Black Sabbath, Neurosis, and Thin Lizzy, Mastodon signed with Relapse Records (Today Is the Day, the Dillinger Escape Plan, Coalesce, Burnt by the Sun) in 2001 on the strength of a four-song demo. The EP Lifesblood arrived that same year, followed by the group's full-length debut, Remission, in 2002. The album made positive waves in the metal community, but it wasn't until 2004's Leviathan that the band's eclectic brand of proto-metal began to enter the bloodstream of the entire music community. As polished and melodic as it was brutal and genre-defying, Leviathan, loosely based on author Herman Melville's Moby Dick, signaled a turning point in the band's career, appearing on critics' year-end Top Ten lists across the musical spectrum.

Mastodon's newfound popularity eventually landed them a deal with Warner Bros., but not before fulfilling their contract with Relapse in 2006 by releasing Call of the Mastodon, a remastered version of the group's first two demo EPs, and Workhorse Chronicles, a DVD that chronicled the band's story thus far with interviews and concert footage. The band's third album, Blood Mountain, debuted at number 32 on the Billboard charts and received a Grammy nomination in the Best Metal Performance category for the song "Colony of Birchmen." Blood Mountain marked the band's highest chart peak, and set the stage for its long-awaited 2009 follow-up, Crack the Skye. In 2011, the band released the CD/DVD package Live at the Aragon, which was recorded in Chicago during the Crack the Skye tour. Mastodon followed quickly with new material, taking a step back from their more prog-oriented approach on their fifth studio album, The Hunter. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi

Mastodon is an amazing evolving band and I love all of their songs. For all of you downing Tool you a bunch of morons, Tool is the s**t also just a different sound but Mastodon and Tool go together perfect....t r y taking some mushrooms and listening to both as your opinions will change!
I love anything that mastodon does. But my fav albums will forever be blood mountain and crack the skye
Tool is actually pretty cool, they are the opposite end of the prog metal spectrum. They are more artsy whereas Mastodon is heavy as f**k and almost more stoner metalish, while I would still consider them both prog metal they are as far away as to bands can possibly be while staying in the same genre. Fun fact; the mastodon guys met at a High on Fire show.

Orange Peel...here we come!
junkbox03
Music vid for Cut You Up With a Linoleum Knife was HILARIOUS!!! Shame they don't have that song on pandora.
Tool sucks and isn't even metal. How can you compare s**t like that to such a good band like Mastodon?
jimmyslavo
mastodon is different than any band we have ever seen, my favorite band for years due to its unique style
@sette82 you cant compare mastodon and tool... WAY different IMO
blood mountain and crack the skye are the best albums
"Curl of the burl" and "The Hunter" awesome songs!!!
I'm a ninja
If you like Mastodon go to www.killjoym e t a l . c o m .
Tool is an elaphant.... . M A S T O D O N is a beast....
Tool on steroids.
I saw them twice, first time with high in fire and dethklok and the second time with between the buried and me and Baroness. Great live band. I would love to see them again
Crack the Skye is the most epic metal album ever made. Over and out!
they don't sound anything like slipknot. How did you make that connection?
Tool on Roids! Awesone

slightly?? i think i just threw up a little.
They sound like a slightly better version of Slipknot. That's not saying much.
wow. its funny how a mastodon page turned into an ethical debate about vegetarianis m and other such off topic points. its pandora guys. just shred what you like and jump in a pit and throw a couple windmills haha. Its all in love.
This Band is Great and I'm only 45
this band is great and im only 12
And besides, if that's the only album you have from them, then how the hell would you know? And I didn't just say that to sound hardcore or oldschool. You're just a hater. F**k off
@IHATEURFAVO R I T E B A N D , It wasn't their first album, and yes, that is my favorite album from them. Everyone has a different opinion, deal with it.
joefab
What a great band. I love the long formatted direction they went in with BM and CTS and then to cut back on the prog element and put out a great album like The Hunter.... Great talent!
Leviathan is my only album I've had it since 05 and nothing on it keeps me coming back for more. If that is their best album like ROBERTSON34 said then I am disappointed . I bet Robertson34 just said that to sound hardcore old school. I doubt he actually thinks that. A band's first album is rarely their best, but people want to sound cool & always say that $hit when it's only true maybe 50% of the time.

Brann Dailor, I have a serious man/drummer- c r u s h on you. Bad a**!
I feel as though the musicians gained more skilled, but they ditched the heavy bass-filled tone that I missed. They're still good, but now it's more hit and miss, whereas before there was a good chance of liking their songs despite lack of solos.
vegans probably get upset over this album cover
seen them at the myth in mlps. Bassist was awesome.
seen mastodon about 7 times.badass eveytime.
shuttup with the old versus new; all their stuff rockits.
Opeth & MASTODON tonight in LAS VEGAS

Blood Mountain incites face rape. You're welcome.
Love everything off Crack the Skye! great band!
Leviathan was their best album
old stuff was better
You know, I used to think these dudes were overrated. Then I got my hands on Leviathan. Then I realized I was being an idiot. Also it got me reading Moby Dick, but that's another story.
from the drums to the vocals... f**k yea... f**king amazing easily one of my favorite bands, but this cd is amazing i can't get past it. Crack the Skye is f**king amazing
Any band that I play in the car and I get a reaction from friends such as What the Fu$# is this!?! While listening to Circle of Cysquatch is good in my book. Honestly Mastodon makes music fun and interesting again, not just continuous amounts of demented mainstream garbage... Long live the Mastodon
Never got that into them but only have Leviathan album. But I will say there live sound is great. Saw them with Slayer and KSE a long time ago. Gonna have to get another couple albums of theirs and give them a second chance.

I don't know how anyone is hating on Mastadon. They are Fing awesome. Any metal band that has put out 5 solid albums in under 10 years is amazing to me. In addition, how many truly talented metal acts have such a unique style and don't just sound like another group of cookie monster singers and erratic guitars. They are completely under appreciated and would have a much larger fan base if radio had the balls to play their lengthier titles. This band will stand the test of time, guaranteed.
I can take Pantera in small doses, but honestly I like Mastodon a lot better.
The Hunter is all I have listened to since it came out. I probably hold the record for number of times listened to. I saw them at The Riviera in November and they were tight as hell.
I wish there was a radio just for mastodon
scazi1017
