Antonio Salieri

August 18, 1750 - May 7, 1825
born in Legnano, Italy, composed during the Classical period
Antonio Salieri (1750-1825) was an Italian composer who had early successes in Milan, Venice, and Paris, but came into his own as the imperial court music director in Vienna. His accomplishments as an operatic composer were prodigious, though his style was conservative and most of his oeuvre passed into obscurity, even before his death. He became much better known as the teacher of Beethoven, Schubert, Liszt, Hummel, and Czerny, and his legendary rivalry with Mozart led to false rumors of involvement with the younger composer's death. Salieri's music received renewed attention after the release of the 1984 film Amadeus. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi

I cannot recall the source, but I remember reading that he sent his youngest son to study composition with Mozart. This is hardly symptomatic of a blood feud. Understand that Salieri was regarded as a towering figure in his day.

Thrilling richness in Cecilia Bartoli. Need to hear more of her. thx

The Amadeus movie, while being entertaining , contained some false ideas and took a certain amount of creative license in the characters and some of their attitudes with regard to their relationship s . That being said, I do agree that had it not been for this movie and it's wonderful music (kudos to Sir Neville and St. Martin In The Fields), Salieri may have become even more obscure.

Amadeus, the movie, may have falsely portrayed him but I'm glad it did. I may not have discovered his music otherwise.

No one should mistake the movie Amadeus for the truth.

I've seen the movie about him and Mozart. Oh great movie! Salieri was such a little baby!

Sal was paid by the note, unfortunatel y . If someone, someday, has the patience to go through his body of work with an eraser and leave only every third note, you might find a halfway decent composer lurking somewhere there beneath the detritus.

I agree with others concerning Salieri, he was nothing exceptional in his pieces's compared to the Master Mozart although I have listened to a few selections. I do have the movie Amodeus and enjoy listenig to the brilliance that man possessed, Mozart just dominates.

If the film is to be believed, he must have been frustrated working so hard and being overshadowed by someone from whom the notes just seemed to flow out without much effort.

I will have to dig through my hundreds of 33s to find some Salieri. In some of my Musical Heritage Collection- there must be.I agree Anita he was lost in the shadows. It does my heart good to see young people still interested in classical music.Don't you just love this Pandora folks!!

I saw the 1984 film when it first came out and I have that film to thank for discovering Antonio Salieri. I enjoy listening to his symphonies and overtures.

I'll be honest, I couldn't recognize his pieces immediately as I would with Beethoven or Mozart, but he relaxes me. Simple compositions , but pleasant. His operatic compositions were fantastic though, he was lost in too many shadows.

Eh, Salieri was okay, he was no Ludwig Van or Rachmaninoff . Maybe I expect too much from classical music, but I expect it to be mind blowing, otherwise I'd rather listen to something else. Salieri was a mediocre composer, he had his moments, but for the most part his music was nothing special. That's why everyone does not mention him, because compared to his contemporari e s , his music did not have that spark of brilliance and beauty. Some of his pieces are wonderful, but most are just meh.

I'm a pretty big fan of this mozart killer. Just kidding but still he's really a joy to listen to. That movie made him look like he was terrible but I like it a ton.

Ignored or downplayed by every musician or professor I've ever known, Salieri shows a passion for joy and a variety of excitements lacking even in Mozart's own brilliant compositions . He was a fantastic operatic genius and was loyal to his muse even when it no longer fit the fashions of society.

Although Mr. Salei is not among my very favorite composers,hi s music is delightful. He is very UNDER-rated as a composer. I'm very glad you choose to play his music occasionally . Ed
