Mel Carter

Mel Carter was soul music at its most vanilla, if indeed he could be characterized as a soul singer at all. Although he did record for Sam Cooke's SAR label in the early '60s, by the time he reached his commercial peak with Imperial in the middle of the decade, he was specializing in middle-of-the-road pop ballads. These actually charted considerably higher on the easy listening charts than the pop ones, his biggest smash being the Top Ten pop hit "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me" (1965), an update of a composition that predated the rock era. He had a couple of other Top 40 entries over the next year ("Band of Gold" and "(All of a Sudden) My Heart Sings"), as well as a few other big easy listening sellers, sounding at times like a more nervous and slightly up-tempo Johnny Mathis. "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me" is the song he'll be remembered for, enduring as an oft-played radio oldie for decades after its release. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi

I have loved Mel Carter's music since I heard one of his songs while in junior high school. Even had a huge crush on him! Still listen to his music to this day and love it as much as ever.
What a great song.

One of my favorite songs of all time. Memories of my high school sweetheart. I can listen to it all day.
Great song...got out of high school in '65, spent some time on the dance floor to this song!
In my high school years I used to dance to this music, love it!!!

My first love, this song is it!

When asked what is my favorite all-time song, this is the one
I always say. I never, ever get tired of hearing it!
This guy could sing. Today we get clowns like Bruno Mars or jerks like Kanye West
I saw him sing all of his songs at Disney Land in California, back in 1965 they closed the entire park for Dorsey High School that night he was great.
Another favorite.
This is music at its greatest...b o r n at the greatest time ever...the 50's
I am an oldies fanatic...mi d 50's to mid 60's are my absolute favorites and this is one of my top 5 favorites... c o u l d listen to it over and over! I have a Wurlitzer One-More-Tim e (Remake) jukebox that is filled with nothing but oldies...my kids were raised on them. Keep these great songs coming...
Such an incredible song. Perfect for taking a night drive with the windows down. I only wish that Mel had more hits for us to enjoy.
There is no other that can sing as beautifully as Mel Carter. That voice goes deep in heart. What a lovely and romantic voice.

This song was popular in the 50;s not the 60's.
so smooth

Mel has a world renow voice! This song will live forever.

One of my favorite songs!
Mel could have sung just about anything! He had that kind of voice. To me..he and Johnny Mathis were/are very simular. The both have a unique style but Mel has a broader range, and I'm not talking about vocally, I mean musically. If Carter had a Clive Davis back then he, would have been phenomenal! His range was exceptional and effortless.. a n o t h e r lyricist dream ( Ella Fitzgerald, Johnny Hartman,Samm y Davis to name a few)you understood every word.

Great voice, Great singer, Music for the soul is what it is, be easy and let yourself feel the music.
Beautiful voice and being an 18 year old in a modern society it's easy to see that music such as this is timeless
I will never get tired of this music. I will continue to sing along with all these singers until the day I die! Love, Dawn
I beg to differ with you sir as I am probably on of the very few people who still have two of earlier albums and if you want to hear his talent listen to his version of The Other Woman hardly vanilla
nbillings851
I like the fact that I can understand the words, it's a beautiful piece of music, I can sing the tune and the fact that I never tire of hearing it is all that matters. Who cares that the reviewer thinks it's vanilla? It's all about ME!
I would like to think the guy meant his style was universal, not so much a particular genre. I was thrilled to hear Hold Me being played on an episode of The Sopranos. Never, never let us go, Mel
Vanilla being the most basic of all the flavors, it would seem to me that at its most vanilla would mean that he was simply a grassroots soul singer. While I don't agree with that per se (he was so much more), to immediately assume the comment is racist because Mr. Carter is black is in itself, racist.

Hold Me, Thrill Me and Kiss Me is a good song.
oneowlami
I think the dude who wrote the bio was comparing him to Otis Redding or Marvin Gaye when he made the comment about vanilla..... I hope so anyway, otherwise it's a racist statement. Mel sings like an angel.
love this song kiss me
Mel...we love you! I especially love singing along with your music! Takes me back to the good ole days when I was so in love!
I LOVE HOLD ME THRILL ME KISS ME
I've got Hold me, Thrill me, Kiss me on impirial records
Mel Carter was soul music at its most vanilla, if indeed he could be characterize d as a soul singer at all. Oh really????? Who died and made you the divining rod of Soul Music?? Lousy Bio. I'm sure Mr. Carter and his contemporari e s would have something to say about this less than flattering, racist statement.
jdianereggie
His vocals truly moved me way back in the sixties and still do!
these critics can't be pleased,and it's a shame!!
He sounds a little like Burl Ives!
jrcobetto
Great singer! He was backed, studio-wise (including Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me) by some of the greatestest session muscians in L.A., at the time (Phil Spector's Wrecking Crew), during the 60's.

How can I block these irritating and often inaccurate reviews?
so unknown by most, but a wonderful voice still!!

VANILLA???? The man is outstanding!
Mel you are "Mr. Wonderful", love to listen to you sing. Very soothing and exciting!
Wonderful... . just wish he would tour my area. Catch him all the time on PBS TV but would really love to see him on stage....LIV E . . . . . . . . D o e s anyone know if he stills performs???
I never thought of Mel Carter as a "Soul" artist but rather a talented Pop ballad singer. He was a fine singer who could convey emotion without going over the top which can be tough to do. Labels are such a bunch of B.S. to me. It is all popular music and accept it on its own merits or not is my philosophy.
What exactly does "at its most vanilla" mean? Mel Carter is a great singer! Mr Unterberger, your bias really comes through in this review.
Great,Great singer. The singers from that era sang from their hearts. Not only
that, but! the world at that time was a great place too live. Everyone in the
sixtys could sing. Today's sound is not music, that's why the music of the fifties and sixties will last forever. Hey! it was REAL MUSIC, and again people
was happy and they sang about LOVE. And every song had a story or real meaning
behind it. :) Happy Trails
