Hold my breath as I wish for death
I'm almost done learning it on guitar
Thank you @far_past_mi d n i g h t for bringing knowledge to some of these other peoples asinine comments. Rock On!
Awesome song.
This is the first song I ever heard by Metallica
In and after world war 2 there was shell shock and mental asylums. PTSD is real, combat is a brutal no matter the decade or name. Shots all the same but this song kicks a**!!
To all that wonder, the song was made after a movie called Johnny Got His Gun
In ww2 there wasn't such a thing as ptsd. They fought through the buckshot,dea t h . a n d kept fighting
Song just is soo legendary
I am. Just lost another friend to suicide and another to an IED induced coma. Being a civilian now hurts more, and this song makes me cry against my will. In a somewhat good way.
The justice for all concert was one of THE best Metallica shows . Dam all the metal heads that were there . Loud as f**k
? Are any of the ppl commenting on here veterans. If not don't think you will never understand.
The video is pretty interesting, & makes you give it some thought.
One of my top 5 favorite from Metallica!
The outro uffff tough
A ways back in '89 there was a VHS tape (probably now a DVD) called Two of One which had both the edited & full-length versions of the One video. Anyway, Lars is interviewed at the beginning of the tape/DVD & *he* states the song is based on Dalton Trumbo's book & movie Johnny Got His Gun, about a physically maimed young WW1 soldier, as Belt noted below. Where this bit about PTSD is coming from is just baffling.

Isn't this song based off the book Johnny got his gun?
I can imagine Dean Winchester listening to this and relating to it deep down but pushing that thought away because it would ruin one of his favorite songs and he doesn't exactly cope well with feelings does he :( ((you won't get this if you don't watch supernatural ) )
It was based on WWII BTW That stands for world war 2 :>
Bullshit
this is my fave song
Haha awesome song these guys rock king of metal/rock whateves these guys kick a**
One of my favorite tunes by them ...
Me too my dad first introduced matalica to me when I was 7 first song was enter sandman now I'm a metal head. F4F PLZ READ BIO THX
I don't think James Hetfield or Lars Ulrich were ever in a real combat zone. So according to Bryan Davis they don't understand their own song?
So in a way you could say it's about PTSD, metaphorical l y .
This song is specifically about the novel Johnny Got His Gun,'' which was an anti-war novel about a soldier who wakes in a hospital after being blown up and losing his arms, legs, and all of his face, including his eyes, ears, teeth, and tongue. But his mind somehow still functioned perfectly, leaving him a prisoner in his own body.

I grew up on this song. My dad got me into Metallica and I thank him so much for it.
I love Metallica I know some say I'm to young to know who they are but I listened to them when I was a baby
nichols1080
Its got nothing to do with f**king PTSD. Know what you are talking about before you talk.
I haven't been to a combat zone and I understand it.
This is a song about PTSD... you will only understand this if you have been to a real combat zone....grea t song
Sure was a big party on the lawn in Irvine. One of the best concerts I've ever seen them play!!!!!!!
The absence of Jason Newsteads bass on this album is appalling. The final mix has the guitars and bass within the same frequency spectrum. There's no low end. Nothing to hit you in the chest like Lightning and Puppets. It's still a great song and album with a bad production.
Great song
Good song (one)....... . . . . . t a m
Good song
This is my moms favorite metallica song.
Metallica paved the way for everyone. If u dont like it, then deal with it b**ch
I've listened to this song hundreds and hundreds of times and it never seems to get old

The word epic was created solely to describe this... One.
Metallica is pure adrenalin being pumped into my veins. Long live the gods of metal

Fantastic album. A true classic.
