Michael Stanley

Cleveland native Michael Stanley became a regional phenomenon, but the singer/songwriter/guitarist and his Michael Stanley Band deserved more national success than they achieved. Stanley, whose real name is Michael Stanley Gee, played bass with the folk-rock group Silk in the late '60s. He then went solo and released two solo albums in the early '70s that fit right in with the "singer/songwriter" era. His talent attracted the likes of producer Bill Szymczyk and guest musicians Joe Walsh, Todd Rundgren, and David Sanborn from the beginning. He formed the Michael Stanley Band (aka MSB) in 1975 and pursued a more straightforward rock direction. MSB recorded a string of albums through the late '70s and early '80s that were modest successes nationally but major hits in Ohio. In fact, the Michael Stanley Band was such a sensation at home that it still holds attendance records at major concert venues. 1980's Heartland was easily MSB's best album, and Stanley agrees. It included the hit single "He Can't Love You" (sung by vocalist/keyboardist Kevin Raleigh) and the minor hit "Lover" (sung by Stanley and featuring blistering saxophone by Clarence Clemons). MSB's second and last Top 40 hit was Stanley's anthem "My Town" in 1983. After recording for Epic, Arista, and EMI, MSB independently released two albums on their own before breaking up in 1987.

The Michael Stanley Band was a reliably consistent, meat-and-potatoes enterprise responsible for superb Midwestern rock & roll. Stanley went on to become a popular television and radio personality in Cleveland. He still regularly releases albums -- solo and the one-off group project the Ghost Poets -- and performs annual summer and New Year's Eve shows along with occasional acoustic dates; these concerts and albums both feature MSB alumni and other Cleveland musicians. Razor & Tie has reissued most of MSB's catalog and two excellent best-of collections on compact disc. ~ Bret Adams

I agree with tantrum. Stanley needs to play big halls to fit his ego into the room. Will look you right in the eye and thank you for being a fan then turn around and make a snide remark t his bandmates. Heard it happen MANY time. Bitter old man who is angry that he didn't make it bigger. Wowing the hometown fans is the easy part. If it doesn't play in Peoria, you are not all that.

This guy is a Huge egotistical JACKHOLE ! ! I have met MANY Music Artist in my time, and NEVER have I had one act like he was too good to reach out and shake someone's hand after giving this JERK a compliment. It is only befitting that he never achieved NATIONAL success. Maybe IF he took a more professional attitude towards fans, and spent LESS time looking in the mirror, or blaming Springsteen for his lack of fame, he may have actually been somebody other than the failure he is.

Many great memories of MSB from 80's HS days, army service in Germany & well after when I had returned state side.

Fairview Park, grew up on this in the 70's. To be honest I could never understand why they didn't go bigger. MS said the record companies would not promote them, hell he didn't sing on their biggest hit. The 70's had some great bands, they just weren't one of them. I mean make a list of the biggest bands of the 70's. There was some big time competition. Saw him many times loved him, but......

I think MSB still holds the attendance record at Blossom...4 sold out shows close to 90,000 people! Worked at Blossom during those years! His Coliseum New Years Eve shows were the best!

I remember going to night clubs in the late 70's and early 80's and partying with MSB that is how they were. I went into the Army went to Germany transferred to Ft. Lewis, Wa. got out after my commitment ended with the Army. In the mid 90's I went back to visit friends in Cleveland and they took me out to the clubs and what a surprise MICHAEL STANLEY still the down to earth kick a** person he was when I left 11 years before. Hats off to you Mike take care.Gene

If, if. You still don't get MSB why he has such loyal fans, find Midwest Midnight, that will set the stage. Then pop a cold cap, where ever you live, put on your favorite home town t-shirt, and put on My Town. Lastly, listen to the entire Heartland album. Those were the days and nights at Blossom.

MSB and Michael as a songwriter were part of my coming-of-ag e adolescence. Many of their songs truly are timeless.

30 years ago I saw them in Michigan; they opened for Eddie Money, and they were very solid! One of the best warm up bands that I have ever seen......To this day, 'He Can't Love You' and 'My Town' are two of my favorite songs of the 80's!

As good as any Pat Benatar or Eddie Money. Better!

I worked at Great America in 1981 and a bunch of guys from the grounds crew there helped the MSB roadies set up for a show in early summer 1981. Couldn't stick around as it was Graduation night and they didn't want a bunch of college guys hanging around the young co-ed grads.

I grew up in northeast Ohio and MSB was a** kicking. Sure do miss Bloosom and the big house on the hill new years eve concerts.
