Mike Heron

b. 12 December 1942, Glasgow, Scotland. This multi-instrumentalist, a veteran of several UK beat-era groups, was a founder member of psychedelic folk outfit, the Incredible String Band, with Robin Williamson and Clive Palmer. Heron’s first solo outing, released in 1971 on Island Records, included such names as the Who and John Cale in the credits, but remained true to the spirit of his main band. After the Incredible String Band split in 1974, Heron remained in England and formed Mike Heron’s Reputation. This outfit followed a more rock-orientated path, but released only one self-titled set on Neighbourhood Records. Although Heron has gone on to record several more solo albums, albeit on a different label every time, none has achieved the degree of success that his former association with Williamson brought.

In 1997, the two former colleagues reunited for select concert dates, one of which was featured on the excellent Bloomsbury 1997 release. Palmer came on board two years later for a series of Incredible String Band shows in the UK and Europe, and this line-up (with Williamson’s wife Bina and Lawson Dando) continued to play on a regular basis until Williamson withdrew from touring to concentrate on solo work.

Good stuff, Mike! Is Warm Hot Pastry a metaphor for beev munch?!?!

Now I read:
"And the Who (minus Roger Daltrey), credited as Tommy and the Bijoux, join Heron on "Warm Heart Pastry," a full-blown heavy rock song. The tune, probably more suited to a Who album, stands stylisticall y apart from the rest of Heron's project, yet it adds to Smiling Men's eclectic quality..."
