Mogwai

The cosmic post-rock band Mogwai were formed in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1996 by guitarist/vocalist Stuart Braithwaite, guitarist Dominic Aitchison, and drummer Martin Bulloch, longtime friends with the goal of creating "serious guitar music." Toward that end they added another guitarist, John Cummings, before debuting in March 1996 with the single "Tuner," a rarity in the Mogwai discography for its prominent vocals; the follow-up, a split single with Dweeb titled "Angels vs. Aliens," landed in the Top Ten on the British indie charts. Following appearances on a series of compilations, Mogwai returned later in the year with the 7" "Summer"; after another early-1997 single, "New Paths to Helicon," they issued Ten Rapid, a collection of their earliest material.

Around the time that Mogwai recorded the superb 1997 EP 4 Satin, former Teenage Fanclub and Telstar Ponies member Brendan O'Hare joined the lineup in time for the recording of Mogwai's debut studio LP, Mogwai Young Team, exiting a short time later to return to his primary projects, Macrocosmica and Fiend. Again a quartet, Mogwai next issued 1998's Kicking a Dead Pig, a two-disc remix collection; the No Education = No Future (F**k the Curfew) EP appeared a few months later. In 1999, they released Come on Die Young. Rock Action arrived in early 2001. Late that year, Mogwai released the My Father, My King EP; two years later, they issued the ironically titled Happy Songs for Happy People. Government Commissions: BBC Sessions 1996-2004 arrived early in 2005.

Mr. Beast, which was released in 2006, found the band going in a softer, more reflective direction. Late that year, the band's collaboration with Clint Mansell on the soundtrack to The Fountain arrived; Mogwai also crafted the score for Douglas Gordon's Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait, which was released in the U.K. in 2006 and in the U.S. the following spring. The Batcat EP, which featured a collaboration with garage-psych legend Roky Erickson, arrived in late summer 2008, heralding the release of The Hawk Is Howling -- which reunited the band with producer Andy Miller for the first time in a decade -- that fall. In 2010, Mogwai released their first live album, Special Moves, as a package with the Vincent Moon-directed concert film Burning. For 2011's Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will, the band reunited with Young Team producer Paul Savage for a more streamlined set of songs. Later that year, Mogwai followed up with an EP of unreleased material from the Hardcore sessions, Earth Division, released on Sub Pop. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

fairly satisfying.. . . . . . . . . . . . .

The song Kids will be Skeletons sounds a lot like Spiritualize d - the drone and the circular melody recycling around and around, getting more intense. Just no groggy Jason Spaceman singing.
i saw them live not really knowing who they were...OMG i was slapped in the face with awesome! i freaking love this band
Im a musician and I've been in several bands but Mogwai is the first band I've ever heard that can express so many thoughts and emotions and images in one song delivering them like blocks of information that stuns you. I know this may sound odd, I'm very affected by music but Mogwai is hands down the most expressive band I have heard in my life, thank you for your unique music and same to Sigur Ros and Florence + the Machine
its a term based in everything rotten about rock and roll
Why not have EP+6?
by the way I saw these guys in Birmingham Alabama where Im from, and it was so beautiful i cried a little...and im no pansy! I also want to note that I spied upon the stage the usage of my favorite vintage amplifier... a n Orange halfstack... s i m p l y the greatest quality goes into this music and not to see them live is a missed life changing experience. Starts off slow and comes on strong and magestical
This is really good. Reminds me why I enjoy the guitar. Much like Pelican.
Its not depressing, its masterful work, you appreciate the depth and the complexity of it! That just goes to show you people don't understand things that arent 3 mins long and say the same s**t over and over again. Shame on you for bashing the amazing talen that is mogwai. P.S. mogwai does have some pretty happy s**t too. ;)
Jesus Mogwai, take a f**king anti depressant and stop it with the slashing of the wrists.
Well, upon closer inspection it turns out that's not Tommy Lee Jones on the cover of the Zidane soundtrack.
True indeed. There is no band on Earthlike Mogwai. Outstanding musicianship .
There is no band on Earth like Mogwai. There are some that try, but none can even compare.
o yeah
This is so good.

"""funny the album is the hawk is howling but they have a bald eagle on the cover""

like most of their titles and some the few lyrics, it seems like it could have meaning almost like it should but i always come to the conclusion that was its only intention. you could identify the eagle with usa and draw some conclusion that it is howling like a hawk instead of soaring like the eagle it proclaims itself to be, but i don't see the band doing much to come to any conclusions or expressions one way
codyserna
This band is nothing but godliness.

Mogwai is just so freaking Great!
Mogwai is what rock needs to be. Zero pretension.
Great music to study to!

Check out Mono (Japan) for some more Orchestral type noise.
...to wind down after a hard day of smokin bowls - AMIRITE!!
Smoke a bowl and listen to Mogwai. Sounds like the perfect way to wind down.
Grace Jones =/= Mogwai. Change the album picture Pandora!
The best band name ever and a nickname I use for my dog, before I knew about this band...Greml i n s was a lame movie, but I have to admit that I liked it long ago.
"but their song names are always, what seems like purposely, shallow.

What's that all about?"

Who cares? Sometimes people aren't as serious as they portray..
Thank you, Mogwai, for creating serious guitar music. :)
jobahootie
After a year of having a Pandora channel in their name, I continue to push Mogwai toward the top of my all time faves.
i first heard the hawk is howling and it was amazing. and i usually like words in my music.

plus, they have the most amazing song names (the sun smells too loud is the greatest song name ever)
The thing that always weirded me out about Mogwai was that they have such deep musical styles, but their song names are always, what seems like purposely, shallow.

What's that all about?
Kinda random fact, but the song "I love You, I'm going to blow up your school" was featured in the Dead Space Extraction trailers. It was pretty cool.
happy to be turned onto mogwai. never heard of the mogmastergen e r a l s .
I'm about 3 years into these guys... their music is still inspiring, perhaps even more so over time. Much love goes out to Mogwai.
I'm quite fond of the government sessions record. It would be my pleasure to see them live, along with el ten eleven.
The only one I have is the remix/double album and it is awesome
Actually, I'd differ from Phantomhunte r , I'd recommend Young Team (featuring the greatest single post-rock song ever, "Mogwai Fear Satan") and the somewhat rare EP +6 with a much rawer version of the driving "Xmas Steps" than found on Mr. Beast.
Phantomhunte r 1 1
Mr. Beast or The Hawk Is Howling
as someone who recently discovered this group what would be the reccommended first album to listen to?
mogwai: great sex under the blankets w/ your first love before the black abyss sucks you both in and rips you apart. forever. (also a "must see live" band).
andreamtoth
Bah! Hah! hahahahha!!! I Love Mogwai.
Saw mogwai live in Philly last week. I couldn't resist the urge to call for mogwai fear sateen! during the encore, of course they played it! and they nailed it. so good.

That Miami vice s**t blew my brains!!

I just saw Mogwai live a couple of hours ago. It was a mindblowing experience.
metalmethod
mindblasting :) music. totally original band.
i spend a lot of time fighting s**t that sounds like john tesh off of my mogwai sation.sol (sob out loud)

Uh, they did the soundtrack for The Fountainhead too, duh...
The soundtrack Mogwai collaborated on with Clint Mansell was The Fountain, not The Fountainhead . . .
