Morten Lauridsen

1943 -
born in Colfax, WA, composed during the Contemporary period
Morten Lauridsen's warm, decidedly tonal compositions have earned for the American composer a secure place in the concert repertory. Born in Colfax, WA, in 1943, Lauridsen was raised in Portland, OR, and attended Whitman College, in Walla Walla, WA. Attending the University of Southern California for graduate school, he studied composition under Ingolf Dahl, Robert Linn, and Halsey Stevens. Following his graduation in 1967, Lauridsen joined the faculty at U.S.C., later becoming chair of the composition department. There, he also founded the advanced studies program in scoring for motion pictures and television; other efforts there won him the Phi Kappa Phi Creative Writing Prize, the Thornton School of Music Outstanding Alumnus Award, and the Alpha Lambda Delta Citation for Teaching Excellence.

In 1994, Lauridsen was named composer-in-residence for the Los Angeles Master Chorale under Paul Salamunovich, the position that would yield him his greatest successes. That year, the Chorale premiered the motet O Magnum Mysterium, which went on to become one of the most frequently performed and recorded contemporary choral works. In 1997, the group gave the first performance of his Lux Aeterna, a non-liturgical requiem; the Master Chorale's subsequent recording of a full-length album of the Lux and other Lauridsen pieces in 1998 earned both group and composer a Grammy nomination. Other honors Lauridsen has received include grants and prizes from the National Endowment for the Arts, ASCAP, Meet the Composer, Choral America, and the Board of Governors of the Los Angeles Music Center. The publishing house Theodore Presser Co. also publicly recognized him as having the two best-selling choral octavos in their long history (O magnum mysterium and Dirait-on from Les chansons des roses).

Though Lauridsen works in Southern California, he returns to his native Pacific Northwest during the summer, composing on a remote island off the Washington coast. His love for nature has musically manifested itself in peacefully tranquil works, often employing spacious voicings and lyrical melodic lines.

Although Lauridsen's primary idiom is choral, he has also composed several works for voice and instruments. Nevertheless, it is his choral cycles upon which his reputation rests, whether stylistically florid (Madrigali), elegant (Les chansons de roses), or poignant and lucid (Lux aeterna). Lauridsen has also had a degree of success composing motets on traditional Latin texts (Ave Maria, O magnum mysterium). If the composer's tonally conservative style and skilled handling of voices have not brought him acclamation from music intellectuals, they have ensured that his works are some of the most often performed of contemporary composers. ~ Thomas Oram, Rovi

O Magnum Mysterium is amazing, although I prefer the Nordic Chamber Choir's performance of it rather than the Los Angeles Master Chorale
I just showed Shining Night to my MeetUp group. It left us all speechless.

O magnum... moves this battle-harde n e d man to tears. I salute Morten and hope to meet him some day. Singing his compositions changed my life, and not just mine, but others in my choir as well.
No matter what your mood is, Lauridsen's work is always soothing.

Always such a delight and joyous experience to listen to Salamunovich ' s world renowned choral work. When Lauridsen is performed by Salamunovich ' s L.A. Master Chorale it becomes a marriage made in heaven.

What THEY said!! OMM is the best vocal piece I've ever done.
Listening to Dirait-on (So They Say) right now. I give this CD to the people I most love. No one should have to go through life without hearing Morten Lauridsen's sublime music.
Some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard. mmmmmmmmmmmm m

This composer's work pull your heart right out of you and into heaven, especially in the O Magnum Mysterium and Lux Eterna cycle. I wept as I listened for the first time to this music. I reflected to myself This is truly a new sound in choral music, though decidedly tonal. Though the tonal palette can wear on you, the wedding of text to music is superb--agai n especially in the Lux Eterna cycle. I listen to it often, which is more than i can say for other 20th Century Composers.

To hear the Los Angeles Master Chorale perform Lux Aeterna live is a transcendent experience. They'll do it again in Fall 2011.

Lauridsen's music touches me deeply; I have met him on several occasions, along with choirs who sing his works- wherever he goes, and wherever his music is sung, there is a light of calm warmth flowing through the space. I am looking forward to the upcoming documentary on his life and music, 'Shining Night: The Life and Music of Morten Lauridsen'.
This is my first hearing of Lauridsen. Lux Aeterna is magnificent! I will be listening to more.
What can I say? I had the great pleasure of singing his "Fire Songs" with Seattle Pro Musica a few years ago...there' s something magical about his writing. His pieces are not easy to sing well but for the listener they're truly magical. They do take a choir and the listener to a wonderful, higher place.
Thank you so much.

You'd better tie me down to earth...beca u s e I feel like I'm going to start to float up to the stratosphere where I'll hear the angels singing...wh i c h is what Morten Lauridsen must have been hearing to write such sublime music. This music lifts me from a place deep inside me that I was only a little aware of.

Bless you, Morten Lauridsen.

Love singing Lauridsen, sublime to be part of the choral experience with his pieces. Rutter is not in the same class.
I have to agree. Lauridsen's O Magnum Mysterium is perhaps the greatest American choral work of the 20th century. Tough to sing too. I've directed it before (good thing I'm the director, I can't sing worth a hoot!). Great stuff--only Eric Whitacre approaches him for warmth, beauty and balance. Rutter is more approachable , but Lauridsen is decidedly more virtuosic. A zillion stars! Note to Pandora: Program LOTS of his stuff!

OMM is absolutely trancending. I worked with Paul in 1970 while in the SCVA Honor Choir (he was still with RW Chorale)thou g h he had lost his tenor due to smoking but my God was he fun. You just knew then he was going to be a world class director. And given his choral sense and broad experience I certainly understand why he was drawn to Morton. I can't wait to learn and sing all Morton and Rutter choral pieces once the good Lord sees fit to call me home.
I LOVE Morten Lauridsen!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Rutter ROX... and is somewhat singable by amateur choral musicians.

Morten ROX, but his music is tough as nails.

Is it me?

He does NOT sound like the often Disneyesque Rutter!
