Moss & The Rocks

Sacramento, CA, garage band Moss & the Rocks released two obscure singles in 1966, both of which contained the same two songs. "There She Goes"/"Please Come Back" first came out on the tiny local Ikon label in early 1966, and there's even some doubt as to whether it was released, as only one copy has been found by collectors. The A-side was a reasonable if crude Byrds-influenced garage folk-rocker, as was the more ballad-like B-side, which put a greater emphasis on vocal harmonies. Later in 1966, the group re-recorded both tracks, with very similar arrangements but fuller production (particularly on "Please Come Back"), for the larger Southern Californian-based Chattahoochee label. This too sold very few copies and shortly after its, release they changed their name to Public Nuisance, which recorded some far harder-rocking, more eclectic mixtures of garage rock and psychedelia in the late '60s. No Public Nuisance material was released in the '60s, but two CDs' worth emerged on the Gotta Survive reissue in 2002, which thoughtfully included both sides of both Moss & the Rocks singles too. ~ Richie Unterberger
