Stars From Aircraft
About This Album
Stars from Aircraft was titled after the Four Level's first collaborative effort, but not surprisingly you won't find that propulsive club hit here on the duo's debut album (it was, of course, included on Pieter K.'s own Everything All the Time set). "Stars" success did, however, provide the impetus for the pair to continue their musical explorations, although it's taken several years for this full-length to finally arrive. Within, Pieter K. and vocalist Amy Jacob travel the electro- spectrum, beginning with the industrial edged "Confidence," its sonic landscape sculpted from bleeps, blips, and fuzz, over which the vocalist makes her stand. "Trepid" is just as sharp-edged, but with hard rock overtones and shrouded atmospheres, "Collapse: Expand" inflates into darkwave, while "Blue Wave" washes up on new wave's shores. But these "Stars" are nothing if not eclectic, the compulsive "Monsters, All" has a poppy aura, an ambient atmosphere, but is driven by clubby beats, as is the equally excellent "If I Land." "Tame" explores jazz, while other pieces slide into incandescent chill territory, with "Natural Light" further illuminated by Jacob's lovely harmonies. The set concludes with "Inaudible," a guitar laced pieced that flows straight into space rock. With ever shifting styles, K.'s intricate but infectious accompaniments provide perfect backdrops for Jacob's cool vocals and sharp but evocative lyrics. Four years in the making, but well worth the wait. ~ Jo-Ann Greene, All Music Guide
