About the Fire follow up their first album with a stopgap EP of all-new material that in some ways outclasses their debut. The word "Anthem" in the EP's title is not chosen lightly or ironically: as the opening track, "So Close," proves, there is an obvious desire on the part of this quintet to be something of a street-punk version of early U2, when they were earnest but not yet pretentious. A similar intensity permeates all of Six Anthems from the Comfortably Jaded, but it lacks the self-seriousness whining that's the downfall of so many whining little emo bands. Songs like "Rise and Fall," with its dramatic tempo and time signature changes that work in the tune's favor instead of as showoffy displays of chops, are effective, passionate rock & roll.
