Mozart Meets Marriner: Serenades
About This Album
In honor of the 250th anniversary of the composer's birth, Philips released a series of recordings in 2006 called Mozart Meets Marriner, including two discs of symphonies, a disc of piano concertos, and the present disc of serenades. As older listeners know, Marriner has been performing Mozart since his days as an orchestral violinist in London and has been recording Mozart since he founded the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields back in the '60s. This batch of releases is drawn from Marriner's second series of Mozart recordings made in the '80s in anticipation of the 200th anniversary of the composer's death in 1991. They have been reissued many times since, sometimes as single discs, sometimes as massive box sets, and once as substantial parts of the complete Mozart edition, and anyone who's heard them before knows what to expect: exemplary clarity, stylish elegance, and nimble virtuosity. For the listener not already familiar with Marriner's Mozart, this disc of serenades is probably the best place to start. Marriner's "Eine kleine Nachtmusik" shines and sparkles, his "Serenata notturna" smiles and laughs, and his "Posthorn" struts and swaggers, all fine qualities considering the works' diverse characters. Philips' early digital sound is crisp, clear, and colorful, if perhaps too boomy in the "Serenata notturna." ~ James Leonard, All Music Guide
