The 1959 movie Black Orpheus helped to introduce the sound of Brazilian bossa nova to the U.S. The music for the film was composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfa. Such future standards as "Felicidade," "Manha De Carnaval" and "Samba de Orfeu" (along with some lesser-known but no less haunting melodies) were as memorable as the story. Unlike most soundtrack albums, this Epic LP does not separate the music from the crowd sounds made onscreen and, since Rio's annual Carnival was the backdrop for the film, the music sometimes gets a little lost behind the noise of the participants. However, listeners interested in the roots of bossa nova will want this album. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
